DVD copying BASIC Question

I've just posted question as to how to burn television shows...

But I've been reading other posts and wonder if I can even burn a television show on my computer.

Can someone tell me -

I download television programs from LW. I use a MSN Media Player or a Real Player to watch. My computer has a CD writer and a DVD.rom.

Is this enough to burn a copy of the television program?

Thanks!:o

Normally I would say you have to have a dvd burner and the software to convert your files to dvd format, but I have read that some people burn movies and such by doing a Data burn and they use a CD for this...The program used for this is Nero, but as Im not familiar with it I cant be 100% sure...
Hopefully someone who knows Nero will give you some advice about this...;)

alaskaitaly July 23rd, 2006 06:09 AM

Nero-info...

Thanks for responding. I'm a bit intimidated by some of the responses to other "newbie" questions...if you don't know the basics, hard to research your answers.

I see Nero on my computer programs - don't know how to get into it.

Any other information would be appreciated!

Sleepless July 23rd, 2006 07:49 AM

I would guess that you have Nero Startsmart (You don't specify what version of Nero you have)

Start>All Programs>(Nero version?)>Nero StartSmart should do it

BTW if you had nero preinstalled when you bought the computer it is not the full featured program but you should have no problem burning data disks

alaskaitaly July 26th, 2006 02:00 AM

Nero-Thanks Sleepless

Thank you Sleepless...

I can find Nero when I go to add/remove programs but when I follow your suggestions to open the All Programs - Nero is not listed.

So-perhaps I should download Nero again? I'm afraid my computer is getting slower and slower and sllllloooooooowwwwwweeeeerrrrrr-

I am living in Italy presently and don't speak the language very well...so it is making it much more difficult to get any kind of assistance on my computer issues. Thus the reason I am asking what might seem like such basic questions! My apologies!

wondering why July 26th, 2006 02:06 AM

It might be in your All Programs > Accessories..
With your computer acting very slow, be careful you haven't downloaded a virus or something nasty...
Check this thread for some information on this....;)

I download a music video i.e. The Sex Pistols it go's into the shared folder,i right click it from the shared folder and move it to "My documents" [if you do this with a film it could take a few minutes] then i use nero 7 and make a dvd by adding the file/clip from my documents and burn it to a blank dvd using nero 7.When it's finished i delete it from my documents [to save space] and i know i shouldn't but i delete it from the shared folder on limewire. It's an easy way to do it.

alaskaitaly July 26th, 2006 08:41 AM

I tried this but...

Terryt...I tried your suggestions but I can't get anything to be able to move when I right click...doesn't seem anyway to get it to Documents.

Any hints?

Sleepless July 26th, 2006 08:54 AM

Go to C:\Programs or C:\Applications or whereever your programs get installed (doesn't have to be C: drive either)

Find a folder called Nero or Ahead (Ahead is the manufacturer) there you should find either a folder Called Nero Burning ROM or Nero Express. These are both burnprograms. (Even better if you find Nero StartSmart which is the program that combines all Nero Programs).

Make shortcuts to the .exe files in those folders and move to your desktop or media folder

Now when you press the shortcut the program should start

alaskaitaly July 30th, 2006 03:29 AM

Nero - what do I do now

OK...I took all of your advice...and I downloaded the Nero Smart program.

But, now I am wondering if MAYBE I am supposed to have a DVD writer on my computer. I have a DVD-rom but not a writer.

Is this going to be a problem?

wondering why July 30th, 2006 04:00 AM

This may help....

Thanks Wondering Why...But...

I had found this link when I did my search...

I didn't understand though if I needed a DVD burner in my computer. But I'm going to practice this afternoon and see what I can figure out.

Thanks everyone!

alaskaitaly July 30th, 2006 05:55 AM

Confused!

OK:..I've read thru the information pages on Nero...Vision 4, the Nero 7, etc...I found one reference to having to have a DVD writer on your computer...but then another reference that you can burn on CD...

Which is it and how to do it?

PussInBoots July 30th, 2006 06:17 AM

Depends on the size of the file you want to burn and what you want to watch it with. I would go for the DVD as you can burn several files at one time and be able to watch it on your pc and DVD player. I'm not sure about burning video files onto CD - these are usually used for audio files.

Larrybriggs1 July 30th, 2006 10:20 AM

burner

You must have a DVD burner to burn a DVD.

Most DVD burners will also burn CD's

larry

Sleepless July 30th, 2006 12:38 PM

You can convert your videofiles to VCD or SVCD if you want to burn them to CD. I have never tried this. I burn everything exept Audio-CD to DVD. Should be easy though and I'm sure that someone on this forum knows how to do it :)

carol 123 July 30th, 2006 12:43 PM

hi can you tell me how to burn a film on to a dvd r using nero what do i need to go in to

Sleepless July 30th, 2006 12:53 PM

Turn on NeroVision then add the file that you want to convert. If it is Nero7 then it will decide on it's own what quality it burn at to make it fit on one DVD. It takes a while to convert+burn (approx 2 hours depending on how fast your computer is)

DO NOT run any other programs while making it. NeroVision draws every drop of juice out of your processor while converting (100% CPU)

Just put your empty DVD in the burner. Start the program and leave it alone until finished

carol 123 July 30th, 2006 01:00 PM

have nero 6

Sleepless July 30th, 2006 01:13 PM

Doesn't it have a program called Nero Vision Express. Should work just about the same way. Can't really remember any differences (long time since I upgraded)

carol 123 July 30th, 2006 01:20 PM

yes does but still dont no what to do

carol 123 July 30th, 2006 01:20 PM

what other places are good and free to download films and nusic

Sleepless July 30th, 2006 01:33 PM

Torrents and newsgroups. None are as easy to use as Limewire. There are a lot of extra settings in those programs

Did you manage to turn on Nero Vision Express ?

This should be easy to do

Just add the movie. Nero will need at least 5 GB (10 is recommended) of free space to make the DVD Image before burning (don't use burn at once)

Choose what device to burn to (your DVD Burner)

Menus and such things there is no need to do things like that before having used it a few times

Nero works in steps. Whenever you are happy with the settings just press Next and some other options come up. If you are happy with those press next again. Eventually you come to theend and it starts converting. Then just leave it alone

Give it a shot. It's easy ;)

carol 123 July 30th, 2006 01:37 PM

when i first go in to it i got this options
what do you want to do
data--data disc---bootable data disk
dvd---video files
disc image or saved project

Sleepless July 30th, 2006 01:58 PM

I would guess DVD

Or maybe video files

Try one of them

It will look something like this (This is NeroVision in Nero7)

Attachment 2612

Choose add Video files. Then browse to the file you want to burn. When it gets added it will look something like this

Attachment 2613

Then just press next until you get to this screen

Attachment 2614

Make sure it has chosen the right device (Drive)

If it has then press burn

It takes a while to convert+burn (approx 2 hours depending on how fast your computer is and the combined lenght of all videofiles added)

DO NOT run any other programs while making it. NeroVision draws every drop of juice out of your processor while converting (100% CPU)

Just put your empty DVD in the burner. Start the program and leave it alone until finished.

carol 123 July 30th, 2006 02:01 PM

i did add the film but wouldnt work could it be because it was an avi format

Sleepless July 30th, 2006 02:08 PM

Then you need the right codec for the movie. Nero should have no trouble finding the right codec after it is installed

Download this program (G-Spot)

http://www.headbands.com/gspot/gspot252dl.html

open it and add the movie to it

It will then tell you what codec you need to play it (both audio and video)

AaronWalkhouse July 30th, 2006 02:09 PM

It doesn't work that easily in Nero 6. Another piece of software is needed to
convert the AVI into the right type and size of MPEG file.

Sleepless July 30th, 2006 02:12 PM

BTW If you bought Nero 6 then go to www.nero.com and update to the latest version of it (it's free) It's called Nero 6 Reloaded if I remember correctly

You will need the install code that you originally got when buying Nero

Latest version of Nero 6 should be able to right ????

I'm sure that I made DVD movies with Nero 6 when I had it (from avi)

utterly confused and disappointed

I downloaded Nero 7....and yes, I've searched the other threads but I feel so inept as I don't understand what to do! I have considered going out and buying a computer that has a DVD writer on it with lots more space....seems an expensive option BUT I've spent hours trying to figure this out and still am watching my programs having to sit in front of my computer!

I really appreciate everyone who has tried....

This is not really a problem as much as some choices that you have to make

I'm sorry but I can not make this any simpler, so this post will be a bit long

The simplest thing for you to do is to go out and buy a DVD Burner for your Computer, but it may not be the only solution.

If you want to be able to watch a downloaded television show on your DVD Player. First check what formats it is able to play.

First check if it can even play burned disks (CD-r, DVD-r or DVD+r)

If it says VCD / SVCD then you can use your CD Burner to burn.

I personally have never done this so I don't know what programs to use. Maybe someone else on this forum has ??

If it says things like AVI or DivX or XviD or Mpeg4 it will most likely be able to play some of your downloaded videos and you will be able to convert the others using programs that you can most likely get for free or cheap of the internet
If it says that then all you have to do is try burning your videos as data CD's using Nero Express or Nero Burning ROM (I prefer Nero Express as I find very simple yet efficient).

Now if it says none of those things then you still have other options than Buying a DVD Burner.

1. If your computer and TV are relatively new then you may be able to connect them together so that you see on your TV what you otherwise see on your monitor.

2. Buying a DVD player that will support all those formats (mights as well just buy the DVD Burner ;) )

The best thing is to both buy a DVD Burner and a DVD player that plays most formats or getting your Computer and TV connected

You can burn data DVD's which will play in your new DVD Player (1 Data DVD will fit more than 6 times what a data CD will fit)

Im sorry if this has cofused you even more :D

BTW Neither a DVD Burner or a DVD Player that support many formats have to be very expensive. Check the prizes on the internet and at your local electronics store and see for yourself

alaskaitaly July 31st, 2006 10:13 AM

I tried...and...

Thanks so much Sleepless for taking so much time to help me!!!!!

I tried the Nero Express...seemed to be working great until I went to play the copied CD-R/RW and nothing showed up except the Nero cover.

My computer is nearly 3 years old...so....maybe the new computer is the way to go. :o

I could buy the DVD recorder...but then again, I'm not sure that would satisfy all the problems.

Presently here is what the HP Pavillion computer has:
1.3 GHZ
256 MB
40 GB
DVD-ROM
CD-RW
64 MB of Video Memory

I'm writing a book so lots of pages, reference pages saved, photos, and now ....my new found love of downloading television programs from LimeWire to keep me in the English language loop (I'm living in Italy right now).....

So...I'll give it to this next week before a purchase decision is made.:o

Hi everybody,
How can i get a good connection from Limewire? Sometimes my connections is very poor. Also what does blue star means instead of yellow stars next to a file?
Thanks
