transfering from an old hard drive

We have a hard drive full of old pictures and music files and software on a computer we dont use anymore after it became so bogged down with spyware and viruses it would barely work.
I have an external hard drive I can plug into the usb and remove any files I still want, but how do I go about this without transfering any of the corruption onto my new, clean hard drive?
