Need help please. I downloaded an image file from limewire, which turned out to be X-rated, and I can't delete it from my desktop. I have tried a few utilities to delete it, but I keep getting a file name invalid response, and the file is still there. Can anyone help urgently? This is my work laptop!!!
Thanks Lisa |

If it's Windows then move all your other files/folders out of the folder where the image is located and then use this command in Command prompt
http://www.google.com/search?sourcei...eltree+command Note: use with extreme caution. There is no recycle bin for slipups |

Delete the desktop? Does that work?
Can the file be renamed instead? |

I tried renaming the file but I can't even get that to happen.
It's in my desktop file, is it safe to try to delete that folder? Thanks a lot Lisa |

Who said anything about deleting the desktop. I'm talking about using DELTREE or RMDIR on the folder containing the file. The reason for not being able to delete it normally usually is a reeeally long filename, which Windows won't recognise. When deleting the folder in the commandprompt the filename will be ignored. In case the file can't be deleted, try the same thing in safe mode. If someone actually puts their desktop as the share folder, then he/she deserves to have it deleted. I'm hoping you mean C:\Documents and Settings\**Your username**\Desktop\(Folder with image you want to remove) If so then: Go to Start-->Run type cmd in the window and press enter It will look like this: C:\Documents and Settings\**Your username** Now type cd desktop and press enter Type rmdir (Folder with image you want to remove) and press enter Then the image should be deleted in the folder you deleted if an error or access denied message pops up, then start the PC in safe mode (hold down F8 when restarting and choose safe mode.) Then try the same thing. Last edited by Sleepless; March 6th, 2007 at 09:06 AM. |

In this case the folder is the desktop. That would be a problem because
Windows would probably not let you delete it unless you are logged in as a different user and that user is an admin and the personal folders of your existing username are not marked private. If the filename is truly invalid open My Computer, right-click on C:, click on Properties, go to the Tools tab and hit the Check Now button. Windows might be able to fix thast file name and then you can delete it. |

If you use Windows XP, what about doing 'start' 'programs' and launching a 'restore system to an earlier period'?

I have never tried deleting the desktop folder, so I really can't say if it would hurt the system or not. I tried making everything visible (system files etc.) and the only thing I could see that I don't usually see was a Thumbs.db folder, which will just recreate itself.
But if anyone is willing to test it (Remember I did NOT recommend this, then I think starting up in safe mode, bringing up the command prompt, and then ending the explorer.exe process would allow you to delete the desktop folder and then create a new using the mkdir Desktop command before starting the explorer.exe process again should work... maybe?? Remember I did NOT recommend this, so if anything goes wrong, don't blame me
