I use the the CODEC pack for Windows (got it from download.com). Run the software (should install itself) and then you can watch AVI files with Windows Media Player. I haven't needed any other player and have no trouble with AVI, Divx, AC3, etc.

And Bitzi (described in this Forum) helps me to avoid downloading bogus, mis-named, or scam files.
