CODECs

Hi and welcome !

I have 'moved' your post to this Tips & Tricks froum as your question is of a general nature and not specific to LimeWire... Hopefully you will receive more replies here !

It sounds as if you simply are lacking the 'correct' CODECS.
That stands for COder DECoder.

There are numerous codec packs available and many people have their favourites and quite strong opinions about them... Surprise !

I don't have any 'favourites'... I just use the ones that always work and are stupid-simple to install...

I routinely recommend Cole2k Codecs which you can find and download by clicking on the same in my signature below.

Be sure to download Cole2k Media - Codec Pack V6.1.0 Standard
The link will take you directly to the v6.1.0 Standard download page.

Stay away from the Advanced version for now.

Installation is very simple.
Install only the Codecs... no other 'goodies', right ?

When finished, shutdown your computer and when you next start you should be able to play just about anything !

Also, you will find many many other posts here on the subject of codecs.

Hope it helps... Let us know...

Thank you very much but now i have downloaded the codec software can I use it on the MPG4's that I have already downloaded in limewire they work fine there but what is the best way to burn them to DVD what do you have to convert them to? I have tried to convert them with WinAVI the video is great but no sound and i burn them with Nero after conversion can anyone help me.By the way what do i do with the codec to use them i have installed them Thanks

once installed the codecs do their own thing..which is to allow you to play many types of video file formats...my rule has always been if the codecs don't play a file, then the file is 'bad' and I get rid of it...

Thankyou thankyou it worked.Do you always have to convert files you download to be able to make them into a DVD?

Peerless March 5th, 2008 12:06 PM

always is relative....all files available on gnutella that are trustworthy are in .avi or some other 'similar' format...so yes, they require transcoding to DVD format...there are places where you can acquire DVD images that only require mounting in a virtual DVD drive then copying to a real DVD, but those are ~4GB files and I rarely choose to spoil myself in that fashion, so I like many others take the ~1hr transcode/burn route

Actually some newer DVD-players will play avi files (DivX and XviD). You should try and check if your player will. If it does, then you can just burn avi files as data files i.e. multiple videos on the same DVD depending on file size.

indeed you can!

Yes...

BUT...

I have yet to see any domestic hardware-type player that will play a plain vanilla .avi file. This includes the rather magical KISS machines.

DivX, yes... XviD, yes... But not straight .avi files.
A further problem is that many of the files available for D/Ling are tagged with references to DivX but the files are not actually in DivX format... They are just plain .avi files !

Hope I am wrong and just maybe 6 months out of date... (Instead of 60 years !!!)
