ISO/ Virtual Drive Questions

After the success of your last lot of help i'm back for more...

I'm now trying to play the .iso file that I have downloaded, I dont have any spare cd's to write the data to so i am going to play it using a virtual drive (microsoft virtual cd rom) but i'm having a few problems setting the drive up.

This is my problem: i've copied the vcdrom.sys file to my system32/drivers folder

Then when I click "driver control" in the virtual cdrom app i get the following error message- "cannot open scm- access denied", that doesnt seem to matter though as i can click ok and get to the next stage.

then I click on "install driver" and then browse to find the vcdrom.sys file i previously copied, but then i get the following error message: "the handle is invalid"

I dont even know what a handle is, let alone whether one is valid or not!

Im using Vista if that makes any difference

Any ideas?

thanks in advance

Well.. first uninstall microsoft virtual cd rom

Then go here instead PowerISO - Create, Edit, Compress, Encrypt, Split, Mount, Extract ISO file, ISO/BIN converter, Virtual Drive ;)

0james0 March 12th, 2008 05:15 AM

was just about to download daemon tools, will see how i get on with that

0james0 March 12th, 2008 05:19 AM

actually sod the daemon tools, you've been spot on so far so i'll stick with your idea!

0james0 March 12th, 2008 05:33 AM

cheers for the tip, thats loads better.

all i need to do now is work out what i'm doing!?

I've extracted the files to another folder, is it now as simple as just going through the set up?

0james0 March 12th, 2008 05:51 AM

you probably knew it was coming....

I've now extracted all the data and installed the app, was idiot proof power iso worked perfect.

my new problem is: when going to load the installed app i get the following error message- "please insert the correct cd rom, select ok and restart application"

i was expecting to get this kind of message and i'm guessing this is where the mounting comes in, thought that would be idiot proof aswell- obviously not!

any ideas?

thanks in advance :xeri_ok1ani:

Rightclick on the ISO file, go down to PowerISO->Set number of drives. Set it to 1. Rightclick again and choose mount to (driveletter)

If it's a game, then most have no-cd cracks available, because not even even legitimate buyers like the bother of needing the CD-ROM in the drive every time they want to play a game.

Just Google "name of game"+nocd (or no-cd)

BTW Deamon Tools is a good program as well. PowerISO used to have the edge, but now I think they are equal... not that I've tried it, since PowerISO never failed me yet.

0james0 March 12th, 2008 08:04 AM

I think finding the no cd crack is probably the hardest bit of doing all of this! All I keep coming up with is iso downloads for the game itself as opposed to the no cd crack,

any ideas?

You may also be experiencing a problem re: 'setup' file(s)...
Might need to do a bit of shuffling around to get things in the 'right place'...

And... er... You know this would all be a lot easier if you just go scrounge some CDs, right ???!!! ;)

Really? wish I knew that before!- so if I burn the info to a CD all I need to do is put it in and play? the ISO came on 2 CD's, still OK?

I thought I had it for a momment, there is a folder named "crack" with a .exe file in it, I've tried moving the .exe in the programme and replacing it with that one but got a new error message instead.

I know the old saying of "if you cant crack it buy it" but i'm detirmined to do this!

ursula March 12th, 2008 10:45 AM

No probs re: the multiple CDs...

Beware of most 'crack .exe' files... They are not necessarily all bad but you need to be considerably out of your skull to do anything with any of them until you have done some serious AV scans of the file(s) !!!

You may only need to locate a document file with the odd bit of info in it ! :whistling:

btw... None of the other mods or super mods here have yet commented on your delightful restraint in NOT mentioning the name of the app that is currently causing you moderate brain overheating if not structural damage !!!!

Ta for being cool about your questions !!!

- you make it sound so easy! :bangh:

Dont worry I ran norton on it until that got as frustrated as I was!

It was all going so well ......

One of the easiest ways to do what you wish is to use NERO...

Just use the Burn Image function... You may need to enable the 'geek' view of the interace instead of the mom and pop dumbo default !
When you select the Burn Image function you will be prompted for the name and location of the .iso file(s)... One at a time, and (please) don't do anything else while the burn takes place... Give it a chance with no browsing or music playing or whatever !!!

Many of the apps out there are quite happy to be installed FROM CDs that you have burned from .iso - and then you must configure the no-CD capability.

0james0 March 12th, 2008 11:03 AM

Thought I'd have one last stab at doing it CD'less, moved the .exe files around again and got the following error message:

"Unable to initialize the ASPI Manager, ASPI support information was not found"

I know i'm close because it nearly loaded.

what do you recon?

Sleepless March 12th, 2008 01:53 PM

I reckon give up an either burn the cd or mount it, because I can't find that program anywhere I trust i.e. either it is old or it is created by the p2p scene/private rip.

Strange a crack would be included on the CD that doesn't work

0james0 March 12th, 2008 02:22 PM

I'll just burn it, seems easier.

The crack thats on there might be ok, prob because im doing something wrong.

Dont really understand how to mount the drive properly. Have got it so that I can see it on the computer and see whats in the virtual cd drive. I dont know which file/s need to be mounted so the app thinks there is a CD in there.

I think I saw it on ebay pretty cheap ....

Peerless March 12th, 2008 06:11 PM

hmmmm...well from my experience if it won't mount in a virtual rom then it won't work when burned as a CD either....in fact I always mount disc images before I possibly waste a CD (and my time)...did you do a bitzi lookup on the file you acquired?

You need to mount the ISO image, not just some files from it. The crack should just have been added to the original CD-ROM.

I did a bitzi look up and all the reviews were fine- cant remember where I found the file from to see the reviews again though!

When I downloaded it, it came as 2 ISO's so not sure which one to mount or how to combine them together.

This is what I've tried to do...

-Opened the ISO files into PowerISO and then extracted the info on them all into one folder on my PC

-Installed the program

-Swapped the .exe file from the crack folder with the one in the program file

-Mounted ISO 1 (didnt work), Mounted ISO 2 (didnt work)

-Tried downloading a new crack but to use it, it wasnt as simple as just swapping the .exe files. This crack created a couple new files and looked pretty genuine. (I've virus checked all of these files with different AV software- just incase) I think by then I'd moved so many files around that it didnt have a fair crack at working.

-Do I need to put a new .sys file in my system32/drivers file to get the virtual drive to work? I know I put one in there for the microsoft virtual but dont think I did for PowerISO

I think the problem lies in the mounting (mounting things has never been my strong point!) I've now removed everything and about to start again for one last throw of the dice. Please can you guys check my technique and let me know if I need to be doing something different.

Cheers again

Sleepless March 13th, 2008 03:11 PM

I looked at other user comments for that download and the comments implied that the crack on the ISO didn't work, but they could be found at "the link that I sent to you". Because this download is so old, the fix has since been removed from that site it seems. Be extremely careful when finding stuff to fix it with. Because the fix is so small in size it is very easy to get fooled be someone renaming a virus.

And no PowerISO takes care of all that by itself, not like the inferior M$ equivalent.

Pretty much the best thing is to check the web for comments and discussions on the thing you are trying to do.

0james0 March 17th, 2008 01:24 PM

Still haven't been bothered to get any CD's so thought I'd have another go and I'm even closer this time!

I think my problem was with PowerISO and that because I only had the basic version I was limited to mounting images up to 300mb, now using daemon tools and managed to get the problem started but it soon crashed before reaching the main menu.

My guess is that the app has a built in virtual CD drive detector, do you think if I put the crack in the ISO file and then mount it, that will solve my problems?

only have Daemon tools lite so will need to find another program to edit the ISO file

Peerless March 17th, 2008 02:30 PM

the craxor file will have nothing to do with actual install of the program per se...its included in the ISO just for convenience...

0james0 March 17th, 2008 03:07 PM

back to the drawing board.....

Sleepless March 18th, 2008 05:24 AM

Correction: You can only make ISO smaller than 300MB with PowerISO. You can mount anything you want to, and if it doesn't want to mount it just change the extension to some format it will mount ;)

Good spot! thats what I meant. It does appear to run better whilst mounted with Daemon tools, ie- it still doesnt work but gets me further into the app!

Got some CD's now so will see if that works.

I hate not being able to do something, makes me more detirmined to do it!

Sleepless March 19th, 2008 04:36 AM

You say you mounted and then extracted the files. I don't really get what you mean by that. What I am used to is that you mount and install, not mount, extract and then install.

That may very well be your problem.

Simply mount the CD and double-click install.exe

Thats what I did to start with, the reason I extracted the files was so i could play around with the files on the ISO.

I know i'm doing it right (its not really that hard)

I now know what the problem is......... bit embarresed to admit it ...................... the app doesnt work on vista! and i'm not joking! :bangh:

0james0 March 19th, 2008 04:15 PM

and before anyone says it, i've tried running in compatible mode, but getting aspi driver error messages again, just like i was at the very start
