Codec not acquired?

When I download some of the files, and play it on Windows Media Player, it says something along the lines of 'codec not acquired' and unable to play them. Some of them even says 'codec acquired' and plays the file with no audio. I know I can play them on a different platform, but I need them to be able to play normally. What can I do to fix these 'codec' problems?

Hiya...

First, you're going to maybe hear a lot of other opinions about CODECs and what 'packs' are best...

I've tried many of them and always come back to

> Cole2k Codecs

If you decide to try this pack, be sure to download ONLY the Standard Pack and use ONLY the 'Easy' install... NOT Advanced.
And, you don't need the toolbar that's offered ! ;)

After installing any CODEC pack, you MUST shutdown your computer and then do a normal 'cold' start.

After, you should be able to play almost anything...

If you update WMP or install any other player that comes bundled with its own CODEC pack you will need to properly uninstall the CODEC pack you have downloaded and installed previously and then reinstall it.
This is a HARD FACT for ALL CODEC packs !

(Many 'players', including WMP, don't actually inform you that your installed CODECs will be either altered or deleted.)

I downloaded the pack like you said. So what do I do next? I don't know how to use it.

Double-Click on the file that you downloaded.
File name should be Cole2k.Media.-.Codec.Pack.V6.1.0.-Standard-.32Bit.Setup

When the installation program starts, follow the instructions.
Select the simple Easy install... NOT Advanced !
You don't need the toolbar so be sure to 'un-check' the box...

When it's all finished installing - It's very quick - you'll see a note saying that it's done.

Shutdown your computer.
Start your computer.

There is nothing else that you need to do and almost nothing that you CAN do with it...
Not necessary as it's all automatic.
When you next try to play something, the CODECs are installed and should be working perfectly.

OK ?

Hello, my computer was down for like 10 days and now my IT professional BF can't find the energy to walk in the room and find out why. maybe I didn't download a codec or maybe the word "gnutella" has always given me visions I don't want. Also, I always find that my old system was just dandy but I'm jonesing for a EDIT song and need to see my very large library. It's either that, or flavor of love recap thing with thaT girl LaLa.Help me. I know I sound crazy, but my identity was taken today and all my money! But the bf bought a beat up ford focus instead of getting us out of this desert hell. Sorry I'm usually a ray of sunshine, but i have 50 dollars(not begging)and 2 dogs and I still have my creditcards, so what to do? go to the ocean. Late at night. Without bf. Oh geez, I've never wanted that route anyway. I'm a tree hugging animal lover and I am not spending another summer here. Oh, the songs download but won't play and now have an annoying blue records rights bs signal. I guess I should have said the problem first, but i'm on the brink, and the bf ain't coming out good. :nono: . Can I remove this after?

What is a "blue records rights bs signal"?
Which program is doing whatever that is?

Hi Ursula,

I also have a problem with CODEC. I would try your advice, but I'm not sure if I'm going to mess up even more, as I don't understanding very well.
I have a Vaio Sony with Windows XP, which after some updates and restarting, the sound vanished. I verified in "Device Manager" and it has 2 yellow exclamation marks in:

"SCSI and RAID Controllers"
! SCSI/RAID Host Controller

and..

"Sound, video and game controller"
! SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC

I tried to 'right click' and update, but it asked for the disc. As this computer is rented, I don't have any disc. I know that probably I have to download them again, right? Please, what can I do?
