You need WinRAR

Click on this > WinRAR archiver, a powerful tool to process RAR and ZIP files

If you're running Windows just download the 3.71 version... ;)

After you have downloaded AND installed the WinRAR program, shutdown your computer...
This is always a good habit to follow after installing any new programs...

After you start your computer again you simply double-click on the .rar file that you have.

There are a few details involved in the first setting up of WinRAR, such as where the OPENED or 'unzipped' files will be stored, but I'm sure you'll work it out.

In WinRAR, after you have clicked on the file you want to open, you will see a screen with all kinds of crazy buttons to press !!!

Just click on EXTRACT TO and choose a suitable folder... DO NOT 'extract' files to your main C: folder... It's best, really, for when you are first using the WinRAR program, to first create a folder with a name that refers to what you are unzipping... 'Extract To' that new folder you have made.

There are also some nice Help files that are included with WinRAR.
This may all seem a pain to you right now, but it is very important, for general use of any computer, to know how to use programs such as WinRAR and WinZIP...

Hope it helps !

TUGZip 3.5 - all in one freeware archiving utility. TUGZip almost same as winrar but FREE -> TUGZip - The Free Archiving Utility. It might have some limitations in comparison to winrar for encoding segmented files however.

Edit: to open a segmented rar set of files, you open the very first numbered one .. in fact it might even the one without a number before no. 1, you open with the rar opening program & it will see the rest & unarchive them & glue them back together as it was before being rar'd.

eg: holidays.rar, holidays_1.rar, holidays_2.rar, etc. OR holidays.part1.rar, holidays.part2.rar, holidays.part3.rar, etc.
You would open the very first one in the series as suggested.

same goes for holidays.rar, holidays.r00, holidays.r01, holidays.r02 etc. Always open holidays.rar

7zip is another freeware open source program, which can extract from .rar files. It can only extract .rar, not pack them.

7-Zip

If you want it for Mac OS X - Zipeg is based on 7-zip and it is free

Or ... UnRarX - Mac OS X RAR Extraction Utility which can also do the passwords & is free. :) But it is only limited to rar files. ;)

leok7V's suggestion is great too. :)
