Saving & Deleting Files

I would like to know if it is possible to delete a file from my Limewire Library without it being deleted at the same time from 'My Music'. I don't want to stop using Limewire but if for some reason or other I had to stop doing so, I would hate to think that I would lose all of the music library I have built up. Help, please.

Providing you've copied the file into My Music & you know that it's saved there - you can delete it from LW's library & the file is still saved on your computer:) Once a file's saved in My Music then you can delete it from LW's library if you want. Do a test - save a file in My Music & then delete that same file from LW's library (select the 'send to recycle bin' option just in case you need to restore the file);)

For instance - if you used WMP & had My Music as the folder that WMP looks at for it's playlists etc, you'd have to make sure that all files were copied to My Music before you deleted them from LW... otherwise WMP wouldn't be able to find them or play them.

Limewire/My Music

:)Thanks.

What you say is as I would have expected to happen but, unfortunately, that is not the case. If I delete a file from the Limewire Library, it automatically is deleted from 'My Music'. This did not always happen as I have a great deal more files in 'My Music' than are currently appearing in the LimeWire library. Can you suggest how I can safeguard 'My Music' Library from accidental deletions?

Deletions Limewire.My Music

I've just copied and pasted all of the files within My Music which are linked to Limewire so that, in fact, I have duplicates of all showing as 'Copy' within My Music. I then sent the original files to Recycle Bin. What has happened is that the files showing in the Limewire Library have changed to show them as being 'Copy'. It's as though the 'My Music' folder on my PC is acting just as if it were a Limewire Library. Can I not save any Limewire files permanently on my PC in 'My Music'?

Hi calmeg,

I'm not sure what's happening with your files. Which OS are you using?

I'm using XP. If I copy a file from my LW saved folder (not from the library, but from the saved folder) to My Music then I have 2 copies of that file. If I delete the file from my LW library (which also deletes it from my saved folder) then I only have one version of the file on my computer... the one in My Music.
*I do not have My Music set as my folder for saving/sharing within LW's tools > options*

Go into LW's tools > options > saving... do you have your My Music folder set as your LW save folder? If you do, this would explain why deleting files from LW's library also deletes files from My Music... whatever you delete from LW's library is deleted from the folder that you've set as LW's folder for saving;)

If you do have My Music set as your save folder, then whatever you save will go to My Music & will also appear in LW's library - that's just the way it works... LW's library doesn't hold the actual files but just shows you whatever's in your saved & shared folders. LW's library isn't an extra folder or anything - it just reflects what you have in your saved/shared folders.

Saving/Deleting Files

Thanks, Birdie. Your latest message has sorted me out (guess who is an amateur?) My OS is Vista but that obviously wasn't causing the problem. As you suspected, I was saving the LimeWire downloads direcly to 'My Music' thinking that should be totally separate from LimeWire. I have changed the LW settings as you say and so far this seems to be the answer.

So thanks again and I wish you and yours a very happy and, hopefully, more peaceful new year. :)

Hi Birdy, i was hoping you might be able to help me with something. I realize that i don't have any back up of my limewire music files and was hoping you could walk me through the process. I guess the easiest way is to copy to a CD or something for storage in case my hard drive crashes one day? I do have 'Nero version 6' if this makes it any easier. I am running XP. Thanks

Creating Backups i'm using Nero6-How do i?

I need to create backups for my Limewire 4.18.8 music files in case my hard drive crashes someday. I have Nero6 and it has a backup facility that i could use. I guess the easiest way to back up is to burn it to CD? can anybody talk me through the process? I have XP.

Hi Neville,

IMO the easiest way to back up files is to just copy & paste files to an external HDD. They're not too expensive now & it saves the hassle of burning lots of CDs or DVDs.

But if you want to go down the burning road you can do that too. I have Nero 7 but I haven't ever used Nero 6, so I don't know whether there are differences between the two. And I've never used BackItUp (I guess that's the back up thingie you were talking about?).

Below are a couple of links about burning/backing up with Nero 6.
