Low Resources!

This (i think) had already been posted before..but I just wanted to confirm it. In version 1.11 I had my system crash once do to 0% resources. This happened when I had Xolox open..and I saw the resources fall.

In version 1.12 it happens CONSTANTLY. It's less frequent if I just have xolox open by it self..and wait for my downloads/uploads to complete. THen I can close Xolox. I have to open Xolox on a fresh boot.

I have 320 MB of ram..and an AMD 800mhz Duron.

This sucks because i was recommending Xolox to a lot of people. But if you don't use v1.12 you can't really seem to connect to anything or do searches.

Win 9x problems

1 Attachment(s)
Are you using windows 2000/XP? If not, you experienced the typical windows 9x resource problems. It seems that Windows 9x does not correctly free reserved memory. I have the same problem here on my WinME computer, also had this with e.g. Bearshare before. After a few hours running Bearshare/Xolox the system gets very slow (might be same with any other client too), due to page swapping. So after a night sharing I have to restart.

Here's a sheet which shows a typical Win9x CPU/memory usage:
(I made 3 shots each running Xolox/BS for ca 6 hours)

PS: I serve the image a while on my webserver, here is a backup attachment:

I never noticed this happening??? I have version 1.12 running and it never did this to me. Could it be cause I have a program called memturbo running? It clears RAM resources automatically and fixes the windows mem leak problem.

If anyone else wants that program you can get it here:

Thx man, this program is awesome for Win9x/ME!

I will post a test report later (if somenone is intersted?). Oh and you don't need to link a Warez page (where is no working link?), you can get Memturbo V2.1 from http://www.memturbo.com

Thx, Moak :)

FOSI

Having no job, and feeling unable to justify spending money on a product I may only use once or twice a month, I like FOSI. The easiest way to get a working page is to [edit] kick yourself to FOSI [/edit] (wasn't really a link in the sense fo the word, but anyway...)

<rant>Personally, I only see Warez as bad if 1) You are a business who profits from the use of said warez, or 2) If *sell* copies of the software (bought legally or not) Otherwise you aren't loosing much when joe geek-with-no-money downloads your software off the net, and possibly make profit due to posative word-of-mouth advertizing. Another example is:

I want to learn to to 3D modeling, but don't have $200K to blow on a school, or even $5-15K to blow on a peice of software... but have ~$60 to spend on the tutorial books the colleges use. So I download Maya Wavefront, crack it, and play around with it, do the tutorials in the book, etc. This lets me get a free education, and get hired by a company that DOES buy the software. </rant>

[edit]To aswer the post below, $20 is $20 more than I have if I have $0, and I tend to use a piece of software once or twice -uncrippled- then rarely, if ever, use it again because it sucks, or I can find a freeware application that does the same thing. I say, if you use software a lot, or have the money to burn, go ahead and pay for it, but I personally don't believe in paying for software I've never tested for usefulness. [/edit]

Moak September 24th, 2001 05:15 PM

I don't feel like argueing abour pro/contra warez today... but don't you think it's "suboptimal" to link a warez page on a public forum + for a shareware program that costs $20? I expect everyone knows Cosmo's Conner, FOSI, Astalavista etc and a moderator will delete those links.

Btw, if you are into 3D, I'm going to write a small OpenGL submarine demo, I'm searching people to help :)

Back to the topic..

I'm runining Win 98. What i've noticed is that when Zone Alarm is running, and i open up xolox v1.12, my memory resources goes down to 0. Everytime.

If I close zonealarm..open up Xolox..and then after a few minutes start up zonealarm again..all is good.

Unregistered September 25th, 2001 12:06 AM

sorry

Didn't mean to make anyone mad by posting a warez link. I didn't even think about it when I did it. (Frankly, I didn't think anyone would mind.) Keep in mind that it's NOT illegal to post links to files on servers you have nothing to do with. At least not in the U.S. anyway. As stated by Code 431.322.12 of the Internet Privacy Act signed by Bill Clinton in 1995 it's not even illegal to host the file in question for private purposes. Anyway, I was just trying to help out the people that were having the mem leak problem by suggesting that they use the program in question. If you have the money to buy it, feel free to do so. I agree entirely with The Seeker. And if the type of files that are so vastly available to download using Xolox is any indication, most people who share files feel the same way. Remember that most mp3 files are illegal as well. (According to U.S. copyright laws.)

zonealarm

I don't know about Xolox, but zonealarm is a huge mem hog. Maybe in this case zonealarm is making the problem??

As for warez, to each his own. I myself steal software only when I can't afford it.

Phanataz September 25th, 2001 12:19 AM

I have to say Memturbo seemed to do the trick. Had Zone Alarm running..opened Xolox..and it didnt crash out. I'll keep using it and let you know my findings.

BTW: what happens at the end of the 30 days on Memturbo? Does it not run anymore?

thypentacle September 25th, 2001 12:27 AM

memturbo

Don't know.

You could set your system time ahead 2 months then run memturbo to find out.

Win 9x problems

Here's another sheet which shows Win9x CPU/memory usage while using MemTurbo:

http://www.milchtrinker.de/gnutella_resource2.gif

You can see that some physical memory (red) is held back (around the first horizontal line above zero... which is called "target RAM"). The computer stays very stable for hours and everything works suprisingly fast, no exzesive page swaps as before - I like it.
However you see the virtual memory (yellow) is increasing. I expect when I continue file sharing for days (without reboot), the limit is reached and we running out of resources again. If you wanna share for days without reboot the best idea might be to switch over to Win2000/XP.... or wait for the Xolox Linux version...

Unregistered September 29th, 2001 02:03 AM

my problem is when ive had other apps running, close them..and then go to Xolox.. my resources drop down to 0%...and i can't do anything.

When i open xolox on a fresh restart of my system, and have memturbo going.. then I can use it.

Moak September 29th, 2001 05:25 AM

When seeing the sheets/comments I made above, you shouldn't wonder.
The heap management of Win9x/ME is leaking. When starting Xolox/Bearshare you first see the CPU is running high and allocates a high amount of RAM. If there is not enough RAM, programs do not work (happens to e.g. Irfanview) or the system becoms very slow due to exzesive page swapping. My advice: Spend your computer more RAM (it's very cheap at the moment) or upgrade Windows to Win2000/XP (if you really need to - never change a running system).

Unregistered October 1st, 2001 05:05 PM

Heh..

if 320 MB of ram isn't enough memory for a single application then i'm looking for another program..

Moak October 1st, 2001 06:14 PM

It's NOT a application programm, it's a Win9x/ME problem.

Another app = same problem. Did you see above I tested more than Xolox. As long as you reboot every 1-2 days you can work without ANY problems at all (windows isn't famous for long uptimes, hehe). Should be okay for normal user, but if this does not satisfy yourself, upgrade Windows (don't forgot to backup all your private stuff).

Xolox stable on win2k?

I'm curious why people are saying that xolox is stable on win2k? Because I seem to have problems with it getting into a state where it says "Connecting..." infinitely and can't seem to make new connections at all. I tried to break it out of its lockup by clicking "Pause download" and then it got stuck saying something like "Pausing download...". The right click menu for pause/cancel download was then greyed out and I couldn't do anything else. Existing downloads seem to continue downloading as long as the connection isn't broken. This has happened a couple times, I think always after Xolox has been running 36+ hours.

I am using ZoneAlarm.

I don't seem to be getting any huge memory leak, though performance monitor seems to be showing Xolox's working set as very slowly increasing. Overall I still show 146400k of free physical memory, 392672k total, 195250k system cache. CPU is hovering around 10%.

Unregistered October 12th, 2001 04:48 AM

Xolox and Zone Alarm don't mix. Doesn't matter the OS youre using. You have to turn off ZA if youre going to use Xolox or find another firewall. Gnucleus works better with ZA..IMO

rampage may help w/ low resources!

This freeware program has helped me avoid those nasty Xolox low resource crashes.

http://www.jfitz.com/software/RAMpage/index.html

Things are running much smoother for me now.

Windows XP

It's also happening in Windows XP. 512Meg, Athlon 1.33 - After some time (varying from 15 Minutes to 8 hours) the system resources are low and the CPU is at about 100%. It's impossible to close the program. I usually shut down the connection and then xolox causes an exception.

No memturbo but Norton Firewall.
