Have you added heaps of files to your library in the new version? If you go tools > options > My Library you'll see which folders you've added to your library. If you've added huge folders then it could take ages for LW to add those files & (?) maybe that could cause LW to freeze.
In that case try removing some folders or if you only share a single folder, try removing some files from that folder.

Otherwise, try updating your Java (or reinstall if you're already using the latest Java): Java SE Downloads
Download the JRE offline installer & remove any other Java versions before installing a new one.
Reboot your computer after installing.

If that doesn't help, try deleting LW's preferences folder when LW's properly closed. See point 3 here & also point 2 if you've used older versions of LW in the past (there could be a folder in either location).
Fixes for LimeWire
This will change all of your settings within options, you'll have to go back through afterwards & reset things. If you're not sure of your settings, go through LW's tools > options & write them all down, so that you can reset things later.
In case you're using Vista: LimeWire Pref Folder in Vista

Are you using XP or Vista?

It won't hurt to reinstall Java, if you installed it online before (ie over the net, rather than downloading the installer & saving it to your comp) then maybe there was some small corruption during the install?

Start off by clicking on the Java link in my other post. Then click on Download, in the JRE part (see pic below).

On the next screen, select your platform (XP, Vista etc) & then accept the license agreement & click 'Continue'.

Now you'll see the option to download the offline installer (see pic below).

Save that installer to your comp, then uninstall whatever Java you have now via Control Panel. Install the new Java & then restart your comp:)

If you're still stuck, delete LW's preferences folder. Check my other post for info about that. Make sure that LW's properly closed before you delete that folder - otherwise it won't have any effect.
You'll know if you've deleted the prefs folder properly - once you start LW up, you'll go through LW's setup again.

See how you go with that:)

I think you might be looking in the wrong place for the preferences folder.

Click on this link (even though it refers to LW 4, doesn't matter) & find the section with info about deleting the prefs folder - it's pretty easy to follow: If LW 4 Will Not Connect

See if that helps.
