Error 1402 could not open key

Hello everyone, this is my first post to the site and hope that someone can help me on this subject.
Adobe reader is trying to install 9.1.3 but it is failing due to the above mentioned erro. The instruction on the error says to verify that you have sufficient access to that key which I have followed and gone into the registry at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURR ENT VERSION\RUN\OPTIONAL COMPONENTS\MSFS
and ticked the relevant boxes for full permission but it still does not install.
I then tried to uninstall the existing Adobe reader 9.1.1. but it will not uninstall either due to the same error.

I would appreciate some information if anyone can give.
Many thanks:sos:

Hello hazel1944,

Welcome to the forums.

Your solution can be found here: Error "1402: Could not open key ..." or "1406: Could not write...to key..." when you install Acrobat or Adobe Reader (6.x-9.x or 3D on Windows)

Not long ago a movie that I tried to play displayed a message that I needed to update my Adobe flash player and then took me to a webpage that looked like the official Adobe site, where it asked to install an update. I exited and then went to the real Adobe site, which said that I had everything up to date.

Another movie took me to a Microsoft-looking site "to update my CODECs" to play the movie. It was another bogus site. I then made sure that none of my players can access the web without my permission. I continue to NEVER install any software via pop-up notification, and always go to the official site to see if an update is really necessary.

Thanks black horse

Thanks for that information but I have already been there and tried all that. I have tried uninstalling acrobat in control panel add remove and nothing happens and doesnt remove it. Maybe I have messed up something on the registry. I will have to continue investigating

My apologies for not fully reading your initial post; I see now that you did indeed go there and done that.

I see that Microsoft offers their wisdom, with clear instructions for Win2000 & ME!

You may want to try Revo uninstaller to remove existing Adobe. (It's free, and a good tool to have, anyway) . If that and a registry cleaning don't do the trick, perhaps the nerdier among us can help (they're usually here, lurking). Good luck.
