Help with Teenagers I know how to use the keyword function to filter unwanted content from search results, problem is, so does my teeenage son. How can I password the keyword, so he cannot delete the words I've selected filtered? I am sure if you have a teenager, you know exactly what I mean.....Does anyone know how to implement more security so that adult content cannot be downloaded in Limewire? |
I presume he does not have an admin account? I guess you could try 'lock' the particular file that holds the keywords so it cannot be changed. This can be done easily on a mac using file information. For windows, file properties should do the trick I suspect. (could also choose hide.) What could undo this? If he unlocks it or deletes the preferences folder. That may depend on whether he has admin abilities in his account. Which file? I'm not 100% sure to be honest. For LW 5 I believe it's probably the Library5.dat file inside the preferences folder. Will this work? Not sure. I tried it on my virtual windows & the library5.dat file kept unlocking itself. I am aware there are 3rd party file lockers out there. Some 'might' be free I don't know. Someone else might have some ideas about your scenario. ;) |
hmmm....hopefully LOTR will correct any misinformation I might give here (I'm a little bit rusty on LW specifics)... you should be able to place the LW information into your My Documents folder, then disable sharing of that folder so that when your son is logged on using his account (as LOTR notes, you can create a user account for him to log on to that is not an admin account) he is unable to access that folder in any way directly and that will protect the preferences file as being read only once you set it that way...hiding files is a pretty easy thing to workaround by simply accessing the folder properties and such (which I guess might be protected via a user account, dunno actually)... |
Only problem I see with making the preferences folder non writable is LW will throw up errors when it attempts to store information such as incomplete downloads, connection data, etc. So it needs to apply more directly to the file itself in question that stores the keywords. |
I should have read closer...that one file you mention where the keywords might be located...library5.dat.... of course, this feature is actually an old request..there have been many parents who have wanted the ability to control what LW will and won't do...the addition of a password to get into the settings portion of the program would be very easy, and if someone could crack the password, then oh well....they probably aren't limited to using the family machine anyways! |
