Hello to all

I am new to this, & frankly practically computer illiterate. Don't get me wrong, I've been using computers for over 10 years now but just for basic things like chatting ,sending & receiving e-mails & downloading songs for my iPod. The problem is I recently purchased a Mac & have to learn its operating system now. I've been reading the tutorials, but when things get technical I start to get lost. Maybe my age has something to do with it, I'm 51yrs. old now, & you know what they say about old dogs & new tricks. Any way, the reason I joined this site was to see if anyone could help me with this problem & I'm sure your tired of hearing it. My limewire was working fine but one day when I was browsing through C-net I read Limewire had an upgrade & after reading the review I decided to give it a try, much to my dismay it would not open & of course I lost my old limewire app. so now I'm stuck with no limewire at all. I tried deleting the new version & reinstalling the old to no avail. If I understand correctly the updated version of limewire will not work with my powerPC processors, only the Intel processors which are not in my Mac so that's my problem. any advice or help would be Greatly appreciated bearing in mind that I get lost if the solution becomes too technical. Thanx to anyone who has taken the time to read this intro, hope it wasn't too long, Daniel.

Hi brickman658,

:welcomeani:

I'm not a Mac user, but hopefully this thread will help (click on link)... there are links to earlier LW installers for Mac: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/mac-os...link-here.html

If you're having trouble installing an earlier version, maybe check out the last few posts (esp post #24 ) in this thread: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/genera...tml#post347203
Or use the forum search to see whether there are old threads around to help :)

LW 5 will work on Snow Leopard. However you should make sure you have all your Java up to date; OSX Software Updater.

However when you suggest you have an old power pc mac, then I'm thinking you don't have OSX 10.6. Knowing which OSX version is vital to know which version of LW will operate on it. If using OSX 10.4 or earlier you are restricted to LW 4 versions. Use the first link Birdy gave to check this. :)

If still problems, give us some system details & tell us what you have tried so far. ;)

Thanx Birdy, & TLOTR.

I'm running 10.5.8 on my G5, & I finally found an older version of Limewire that works OK, so for now I'm OK. I just wish I could update to the new version of LM Pro, but until Mac works out the kinks with Java, I guess I'll have to make do with the older, slower version. Once again thank you both for your input, I look forward to corresponding with you all, & hopefully becoming more computer literate with your help in the future. Be well, Daniel.

Mac never released a Java 1.6 for 32-bit machines for OSX 10.5. Strangely Mac did release Java 1.6 for 32-bit machines for OSX 10.6 Snow Leopard. So you'd need Snow Leopard if you wanted the most recent LW version. :) LW 5 needs Java 1.6

bit what?

LOL Thanx for your prior advice LOTR, in your last response to me you mentioned 32 bit. how do I know how many bits I'm running? Is running the proper term? all your help is appreciated, Brickman.

Lord of the Rings January 20th, 2010 10:38 AM

Explained here http://www.gnutellaforums.com/318168-post6.html Check your Java preferences & see if Java 1.6 is listed. If not, then you are running a 32 bit machine. :) For OSX 10.5 Leopard, Java 1.6 was only available on 64-bit computers (intel computers.)

brickman658 January 20th, 2010 11:06 PM

java preferences are listed as 12.5.0 is that 32 bit?

Lord of the Rings January 21st, 2010 12:32 AM

LW 5 will only operate with Java 1.6 (also called 6), anything earlier & you are restricted to LW 4.
I think you miswrote the Java version there .. I'm guessing it's Java 1.5 unfortunately. :(

brickman658 January 21st, 2010 09:22 AM

Unless I' looking in the wrong place, about this computer-Contents-Software-Applications-Java Preferences 12.5.0 Java web start 12.5.0 Software Frameworks- Java Application Launcher 12.5.0 Java Script Core 5531.21 Java Script Glue 5531.21 Bt then again, it's all greek to me. More importantly, I've downloaded LW 4.18 for now, it will have to do until something is done so that I can get LW 5.2.4 Pro. c'est la vie. Thanx for all your help, Brickman. :)
