Privacy

Hello! I am new around here, and need some advice on two things:

1. Privacy: I have searched and found a considerable amount of discussion on hiding one's IP ... anonymizers, VPN, etc. ... but it has left me confused. I have Limewire 5.5.8 and Java1.6.0._20 on a machine running XP inside a wireless LAN. I feel totally exposed and do not like that feeling. What
should I do to torrent anonymously?

2. Location of files: I don't like files piling up in the Limewire folder because it is in My Documents. I would rather have all my torrented and other media in other folders outside My Documents on C or some other drive, and still keep them accessible to others on the Gnutella network. How can I do this?

Many thanks in advance!

You don't have to take the default download location for any of your applications including Limewire.

All you have to do is create another folder on your C:\ drive and call it something like "Downloads" (you can call this directory anything you like) and then create another three sub-folders, called "Shared", Saving" and Incomplete under your "Downloads" folder.

Finally go to Tools >>> Options and amend the Limewire default settings to your new folders.

There's a few options. One UKbobboy01 suggested is ideal. You can always right-click a file in the download window & choose Change Location .. or in search results choose Download As ... & choose location. In that way be able to separate Torrent files from Gnutella files.

Lord of the Rings,

Thank you, but I am a little confused. Isn't Gnutella the network and torrent the process? Then my torrent files are also Gnutella files, right?

Two separate p2p sharing protocols.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BitTorrent_(protocol) and Gnutella - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia which are separate.
Torrent files are usually linked to a website when they are initially hosted. Everyone must download this torrent file before they can start downloading the actual torrent file content from others.
Whereas Gnutella files are simply files that are shared from any gnutella program's share folders.

In simple terms, I guess comparing the two is like comparing two different kinds of public transport, both can reach the same destination but in their own way.

For private sharing on Gnutella network, good if you can get friends together.

For Torrents, there are what's known as Private Torrent sites which have restricted membership. However LW is not an accepted torrent program at any private torrent site I'm aware of.

For more on privacy using torrents, Sleepless & Peerless would be best two to ask here I guess.

For overall privacy on Gnutella network, I guess using proxy connection is one way, however they are often unreliable for connecting p2p through and even after that, finding ones with reliable speeds can be limited.
There are options like Tor. has a small list of options

Lord of the Rings,

Thanks so much for taking time to nicely explain something that must have sounded elementary/stupid to you. Anyway, I understand it now, and will also go through the Wikipedia articles. Thanks also for the options link. I will check them out.
