install error 1714!
 

i did have limewire but my dial-up connection was way toooooo slow so i thought i'd remove it but under add/remove programs the unistallation never worked so i had to do it manually! dodgy, i know but removed the file + set-up program + nil found when i run FIND for limewire.
so far so good, but now i'm on broadband + want limewire back + when i run the set-up now the installshield gives ERROR 1714 saying it's found an older version + i have to exit.
1- why doesn't limewire automatically override older versions on update?
2- how can i find + delete this older version?

search for limewire delete everything you think is limewires
delete C:\Documents and Settings\shared location\.limewire
delete C:\Program Files\LimeWire\LimeWire 4.0.7
by the way the folder/\ there I gave you the default location it might not be specifically there
make a google search on how to delete invalid programs.
learn and get rid of the old copy...
install the file which you downloaded from www.limewire.com
install the latest java which you'd download from java.com
don't ever delete these files again before uninstalling!
if this doesn't work wait until someone else gives a better answer if that other person doesn't come your screwed and an extreme which I wouldn't go to is reinstalling windoz

i had to just dlete the files as limewire didn't uninstall - a box would appear like it was beginning to + then it closed + the file was still on add/remove progs list.
i manually removed LW 4.05 (?i think that was the version, i DL it in march) + files found under search. i don'r seem to have a c:\docs+settlings\shared folder.
i did the deleting invalid reg entries re LW as per the google search but error 1714 still happens + LW won't install.

ok, that didn't help as i'm on windows 98!

i don't do anything except try to install limewire using limewire setup.exe; i agree to install it in prog files\limewire but then get the error message 1714 saying it's found an older version.
problem is, i can't locate that prev version + have deleted the HKLM\software\microsoft\windows\current version\uninstall keys (there were 2).

hope you can help as LW is one of the reasons i went to braodband + i can't get it! soooooo frustrating

Have you tried dwnlding the most recent version or the beta 4.1.5? And of course make sure you have the most recent version Java. The english & international versions of LW use different techniques of installing! It might be worth trying out both! Good luck.

had tried all other advice re add/remove plus, delete reg keys relating to LimeWire + whole heap of stuff that did nil.
i DL the international version (interestingly twice as large a file) + halakazaam, i'm skanking
