"unpacking"

HELP! PLEASE!
I had an older version of limewire. Last night I opened the program and was prompted to download the latest 7 greatest 4.6.0 version - which I did.
Installed it and it kept getting stuck on the "unpacking" phase of the download aftet the "Finishing Installation" pop up window.
IT JUST FREEZES THERE! I dod "Cont. Alt. Del." and it says "LimeWire setup" not responding.
I tried updating my JAVA to 4.2.1 SUN like they say on on of the forum pages. That got me a little further but it still freezes on the "upacking" part.
Now here's the bad news >> I'm running Windows 98! Sorry!
I would appreciate any help! I really dod not want to go back to the evil land of KAZAA!
Thanks for your time!

Lord of the Rings February 26th, 2005 04:30 AM

That's Win 98 not OS/2 right? The most recent version of Java is 1.5 http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/download.jsp (take the JRE)

Instead of installing over the net, SAVE the installers to your HDD before installing.

jet6619 February 26th, 2005 05:50 AM

im getting the same problem, but with windows xp

Zabel06 February 26th, 2005 01:34 PM

Still the same

Okay - 1st of all THANKS FOR YOUR HELP!!!
I did what you asked by downloading the 5.0. That went fine except at the end I got "This program has performed a fatal error" pop up window. I closed that and then the program finished installing. Strange?!?
So I went to the LimeWire install and tried again. SAME THING! It gets stuck on the "upacking" pahse right after the "Finishing Installation" window.
Any other ideas > PLEASE!
Thanks again!

Did you install over the net or save the installer to your HDD. The latter I would recommend. Installing over the net can result in temporary pauses & loss of ...efficiency in installation & downld. This might sound crazy but I had an installation issue & I solved it by rebooting after downlding the installer. Then installing. But someone else tried that & it didn't make any difference for them. And I know it's a pain rebooting. But rebooting can clear the OS & ram of previous activities. If the installation is the only process happening then there's a much better chance of success if there is any difficulty.

The last resort is to clean up your registry. If you don't have a decent registry cleaner there's some HERE (click on link) (Some of those are free I think from memory.)

If you still have problems then there is an alternative installer I think. You just unzip it & use it. See Here about 'other' version.

Zabel06 February 26th, 2005 02:31 PM

I right clicked and choose "Save Target As".
Then opened it from there. Is that what you mean?!?
Sorry, not that computer savvy!
If that is NOT correct, please explain the correct way.
I also tried the "Other" download option and could not open the ZIP file for some reason.
And I did try the rebooting thing too - no luck there either.
Thanks again for your help.
O!

Lord of the Rings February 26th, 2005 02:54 PM

I presume right-clicking does the same thing. I get 2 browser options, save as file or install, etc.

That 'other' verison shoud work ok. hahaha xcuse me but sounds like nothing's going right! Try again unzipping. Hmmm when was the last time you did a system maintenance check? You are using admin priviledges I presume? I wonder ... I'm not a windows user per se, though I do have win 2k on my computer. I wonder if you could achieve what you want to do after a SAFE Boot.?!? Try disconnecting from the net, & temporarily disabling your firewalls & anti-virus, adware & spyware before you try installing.

Zabel06 February 28th, 2005 02:32 PM

I'm still working on it!
Again I really appeciate your help.
How do I do a SAFE BOOT?
I'll try turning off the firewalls and such. I will also try that reg. cleaner that you recomend.
Anything else???
Again, THANKS!

This is thanks to rtp. I just did a copy and paste from his post. It may help with your problem.

I have found a qucik fix to this problem upon freezing upon fianlizing the install of the pro version.

Upon installation it freezes at the unpack 2000.exe or just stops at finalization try this.

Leave the program where it freezes at with the 2 boxes up telling you it is finalizing. Now hit control + alt + delete and bring up the task manager. Now very carefully locate all instances of any temp files being listed one by one and end process on those .... these are temp files that are being created each time the process is ended on each one. Now note everytime you end process on each one of the temp files the meter on the install process box goes up .... keep doing this process until the installation is complete.

NOTE: The temp files I am speaking of have numbers in front of the temp file EXAMPLE: ns41.temp, ns.temp of any kind or any temp file.

Seems as though the program for some reason is creating these temp files and this is jamming it or stalling it.

Hope this helps everyone with this.

Oh and before I found this out I downloaded the version 4.4.1

GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!

Oh and for the price of this fix I am adding a signature link to this forum and respect that it be left here in tact.

Kdogg did you try the suggestions from earlier in the thread? The 'Other' LW might do the trick.

Tryed it just now... says " Limewire was unable to load. Please download and install LimeWire again." , and i did that, still didnt work... and i guess the version is 4.6.0 not 4.8.0...i think...

P3GMR March 6th, 2005 09:28 AM

Try downloading the new Limewire. http://www.limewire.com
It says it is 4.6.0, but it is actually 4.8.0. If you download it, the Icon on your desktop will change from 4.6 to 4.8......
thats really all I can do to help

Kdogg March 7th, 2005 01:37 PM

....uhh...you obviously dont understand any thing...mebe some one who does?

fabion March 7th, 2005 02:26 PM

Greetings kdogg

Try deleting LW again. After you do this use windows explorer and make sure all instances of LimeWire have been removed from your machine. If you find anything asscociated with LimeWire delete it.

After you have done this run a registry cleaner. If you don't have one there is a link to one here.
http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...gistry+cleaner

I think you may have something messed up in your registry, preventing it from installing.

After doing that try and install LimeWire again.

Keep us posted, and best of luck

Kdogg March 7th, 2005 04:44 PM

*Sigh*

Well, i tryed some of those regristry cleaners, most were things that i had to regrister to get all the scanning, but i deleted everything Limewire wise, and then tryed the scan , then installed and same thing, it crashes/locks up.

sberlin March 7th, 2005 07:21 PM

If some of the folks having the 'freezes during finishing installation' problem can contact me at sberlin@limepeer.com , we're going to try and figure out once and for all what's causing this.

Thanks.
