fatal java.lang.Error

I was running LimeWire 4.4 with Java 1.3 with no problems. I upgraded to Java 1.5 and installed LimeWire 4.6 but during the initial setup, after the "firewall preparation" step, it had a fatal internal error.

The "Review" message started with:

java.lang.Error: IP Helper Library GetIfTable function failed
at java.net.NetworkInterface.getAll(Native Method)
etc.

I tried reverting to my earlier installation and got the same problem.
I also tried several other combinations of Java and LimeWire versions, and went through the steps in "Fixing LimeWire", but it hasn't helped.
Any ideas?

P.S. I'm running Windows 2000, have an ADSL connection, no firewall.

Can anyone help with this problem before it drives me crazy or worse, back to Kazaa? The firewall preparation test is crashing my LimeWire setup every time, with the error msg below.

I was able to avoid it for a while by going back to LW 4.26 on Java 1.3, (apparently the last LW without that step) but now that combination started returning a "Launcher Error" stating that "LimeWire was unable to load the Java Runtime Environment" and telling me to download the latest JRE. (It said this even with JRE 1.5 installed!)

I think it¡¦s related to my Internet connection settings but I can¡¦t figure out just why. (I connect to ADSL using the EnterNet 300 PPPoE app and a network card.) I've tried all combinations of LW and JRE as well as a number of tweaks with no success. Thanks for any help anyone can give me¡K

Try a Registry cleaner. If you don't have one, get one HERE (click on link.) Then try re-installing Java. When installing LW, instead of installing over the net, save it to your computer. Then install it.

By the way do you have anti-virus & spyware & adware utilities. De-activate them during installation & initial start up of LW. See how that goes.

I followed your advice, then tried reinstalling Java and LW again (several versions)...No luck!

I always get the error described above after clicking 'Next' at the Firewall Preparation window. (I don't have a firewall.)

Do you know exactly what LW does at this point? How does it contact the network?

I assume the problem lies with my Internet/network settings...
The ADSL connection software my ISP uses (EnterNet 300 P.P.P.o.E. )seems to be a bit buggy and needed some tweaking to work properly...

Same problem as this one: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=34340

Delete your LW preferences folder as described here: Fixes for Limewire Try the 'Other' installer. You just unzip it & use it.

It might be an idea to download the installer to your computer, disconnect from the net temporarily, disable your firewall temporarily, then install LW. Then if it installs ok, re-enable everything.

Thanks again..My problem is not exactly the same as those threads and the error comes at a different point...
LimeWire is installed, but the settings aren't finalized...
At the last step, the 'firewall preparation' window, when LW says it needs to "receive information from the network", hitting Next gets me an error box and the error message above. LW doesn't totally crash (at first)-- I can go Back and change options, but it won't go past that step. The alternate installer leads to the same results. However, this time I WAS able to re-install an old copy - LW4.26, which doesn't have that firewall step. So it seems that's where the problem is...but I don't know why. As I said I don't even have a firewall, just AV software, and turning it off doesn't seem to help.

I don't know if this is useful but here are my IP settings:

still haven't really solved this problem...

Does anyone know exactly what LW does when you hit "Next" at the firewall preparation window? I always get this error msg:

"java.lang.Error: IP Helper Library GetIfTable function failed"

The log for my ADSL software gets a message that seems to be related (though it doesn't affect the connection):

"GetIPForward Table failed with 902 - using snmp table."

Anyone have a clue about this?
