Read this sticky 2nd down http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=29990

What java version are you using? might help also if you provided a better description like the exact message it gives?

ILLZ March 10th, 2005 03:18 PM

I'm not sure what you're referring to in that sticky that I did not properly do in my thread.

The error message is:

"LimeWire has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience".

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling, and also tried deleting the .limewire folder, but I cannot find that. I searched for it to no avail. I think I may have deleted it when this problem first arose a few weeks ago and have since forgotten.

As for the java aspect, I'm not sure what version I'm using, how can I tell?

Thanks!

Download java 1.5 update 2 JRE found here http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/download.jsp

You can tell you java version in LW by selecting the: "About Limewire" menu.

Bonne chance :)

I tried downloading and installing the java update in the above post and got this error message when I attempted to install it:

The installer cannot continue because the files necessary for the installation are unavailable.

et voilą March 10th, 2005 04:05 PM

[Not helpful] Well, it's windows, some things like that are bound to happen. Are you willing to do the spring cleaning are reformat your drive? [/Not helpful]

Conclusion: I don't know why, it shouldn't happen, your windows installation is probably ****ed up.

:o

ILLZ March 10th, 2005 04:18 PM

Jeez, I hardly think that this java installer not working is reason enough to reformat my hard drive!

I guess I'll keep working on it, and wait to see if anybody on these boards can lend a hand.

Thank you for your assistance thus far!

Well it doesn't look good. It may come to et voila's suggestion.

I think your registry is messed up. Uninstall Java completely from control panel>add or remove programs.

After that uninstall LimeWire from start>all programs>LimeWire --- You will find an uninstaller there(hopefully). Then go to control panel>add or remove programs --- see if LimeWire is listed there --- if so remove.

Then use windows explorer and search for any references to LimeWire and Java. If you find any delete them.

Then run an anti-virus scan. I would also suggest downloading spybot and ad- aware. If you don't have these search(upper right) for --- ursula --- in right hand side --- click any reslut. Her signature line has a link to the various software I just mentioned.
Run them after you d/l them.

Then run a registry cleaner. you can find one here. http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...gistry+cleaner

After you have done all this d/l and install the latest version of java then LimeWire.

It sounds as though you may have been infected with a virus, trojan or worm.

These steps may not even work, and you may have to end up having to uninstall WindowsXP, formating the hard drive and re-installing. Sometimes this is the only remedy, depending on the extent of the damage done.

Best of luck

I used to run ad aware and spybot and then found that they were somehow messing up my computer, ie, I had to reformat it 4 times. After the 4th time, I decided against them, and have been fine ever since. I realize this sounds terribly ignorant, but it works. Other than limewire, everything else on my computer works in tip top shape with no slow down whatsoever. I also have a subscription to Norton, with updated virus definitions. Do you still think I should run ad aware and spybot?

Thanks.

murasame March 10th, 2005 05:05 PM

Those programs will only mess up your comp if you delete stuff that you shouldn't. That's why after scaning your comp they show the results and offer you a chance to choose what to delete and what to not.

et voilą March 10th, 2005 05:11 PM

You ought to use an anti spyware proggy on windows. If you still want to P2P without reformatting for LW, I suggest you trying Ares. http://www.aresgalaxy.org/ Less stuff and technologies than LW, but good nonetheless.

Ciao

Yeah, I think that's probably what I did. The problem there is that I'm not sure what to delete and what not to delete, so I just delete it all.

fabion March 10th, 2005 06:09 PM

Hmmm if that is the case and you deleted important registry entries you can put in you WindowsXP CD and select repair.

This should fix what you accidently deleted.

ILLZ March 10th, 2005 06:40 PM

Well, I haven't run ad aware or spybot since I redid the whole system for the last time, so I haven't deleted anything. Does that make sense?

fabion March 11th, 2005 04:50 AM

Well the only sense it makes to me is that 1. was the first thoughts of a virus etc. or 2. when you installed last time you didn't install everything or 3 like Raaf said something is corrupted, which could have happened during your installation.

It doesn't look or sound good. Did you try doing the repair.

ILLZ March 11th, 2005 06:44 AM

I've only got 4 system restore discs...is that what you're referring to? Those are what I use to redo the computer.
