LW loading blank and how i fixed it.

Running LW 4.8.1 basic, windows xp, updated as far as i know

Today i started up LW and the window appeared but ther was nothing on it, the main window was all white and the "upgrade to pro" window was just grey. Restarted my comp a few times didnt fix it.

Solution i used:

LW had worked for me before so i knew it should be working, the only thing i had changed is in my video options for windows.
i have a ATI x800

right click on deskto-> properties -> Settings tab -> advanced button -> 3D ati tab -> direct 3D -> custom button

i had just switched the check boxes labled "application prefference" for AA and anisotropic from checked to unchecked becasue of a game i was playing and set them to 4x AA and 8x Ansi. Then i later i started LW and got the blank screens, so i changed the boxes back to "application prefference" checked and LW started normally.

Hope this helps anyone having this problem (i know thre was at least one other person) and to the LW devs, hope this helps you fix it more permanently.

This seems to be the way to fix the Blank screen on startup for those using the ATI graphics card.
Some other posts with identical answer can be seen from the following links: 1. Hmm limewire giving me gray screen now - easy answer!, - 2. Work thru solution A, - 3. Solution B

Symptoms: If your LW starts with a small, borderless blank white window, which is then quickly overtaken by a larger, bordered window, entitled "Language Options". This window is completely filled in with blank space. It locks up and won't do anything.

For those of you who use NVIDIA graphics card who suffer the above symptoms, the answer seems to be to downgrade your Java back to Java 1.4.2; ie: Uninstall Java using your Add/Remove Programs Control panel. Then download the Java 1.4.2 installer & save it to your computer (don't install over the net!) Then install Java 1.4.2 & your startup issue should be solved! ;) :) (LW will no longer run with Java 1.4 so this fix is not recommended. A later version of Java instead.)
Other examples: 1. radeon/nvidia, 2. Java solution.
* LW will no longer run with Java 1.4. And recent problems with graphic card clashes have shown Java 1.6 to be a problem for some people. Uninstall Java 1.6 & install Java 1.5. JRE 5.11 offline version (J2SE) 5.0 Update 11 (choose JRE) which always worked better for some people, else 5.0_16 (1.5_16 choose JRE). This may also be an issue for other types of video cards, and same fix. ;) http://www.gnutellaforums.com/genera...tml#post335357
