How to activate CD Drive (E)
 

Until recently and I don't know why or how but I can't get my "E" drive to even show up on my computer. That's the drive I need when I Burn CD's. Anyone have any ideas?

I have the same problem! I can't find it! Have you found it yet?

Wow, I can help I think. Very easy, just open "My Computer" which is on your desktop. It will instantly appear as E: once the drive is plugged into your computer, likely a USB port. When I plug my flash drive into my USB port it shows up just as I described.

the queries are in regards to an internal CD/DVD drive.....

a simple Google search for 're-detecting CD drive' gives plenty of results..since I've never had this happen I refuse to give exact advice, especially when it comes to manually editing the registry....

I will say that if the drive is functional it should show up in the BIOS of the machine...some playing around with the BIOS might work if something happened at that level to corrupt the BIOS settings (possible bad CMOS battery), but such endeavors are not for the weak hearted and should be approached very carefully unless you are familiar with your BIOS or BIOS's in general

Ok, but shouldn't any drive that is installed still show up in My Computer? At least everything appears there for me and I have a floppy drive (A), a CD ROM drive (D), a hard drive (C) and as mentioned if connected an External drive (E)

Maybe the drive is not installed properly or not compatible with the operating system otherwise the computer should detect it.

it is a known problem that sometimes things can go awry and drives simply disappear and are not automatically re-detected....

it would appear from the wording of the above posts that the drive at some point was available via My Computer and has now disappeared....which would of course indicate that it was installed correctly (i.e. plugged into the PSU and connected via a cable to the MoBo and appropriately set up as either master or slave if that was required for the system) and compatible with the OS when it was working...

sure, the drive might just up and die completely or become unplugged from either the power cable or the cable to the MoBo (either IDE or SATA) which of course should be checked if the drive fails to be present at the BIOS level....

Just a thought I had, occasionally my scanner vanishes and is not detected. What I would do to correct this is to go to my device manager and click on refresh. If it does show but not communicating, try to "remove" it in the device manager and then click "refresh" and the computer may then detect it. To get to the device manager, I right click on My computer icon, select "properties" and then I can select the Device manager.
