Just What We Need, a New Thread, But I Have Questions.

Okay,
So I must have overstepped myself in the last thread, offered WAY too much info. I'm quessing folks in this forum prefer anonimity. (If it's spelled wrong, sound it out phonetically, I'm to tired to look it up.) "Anon, anon!" Shakespeare used that a lot; I think it means bye and bye or someday. Nothing to do with computers though. I digress.
I've never used a forum before, so I may blunder now and then, but the rules seem to say exactly how I feel. I'll give it another try.

New questions about LW and uploads:

When I click the monitor tab and see files being uploaded, are they from my machine, or am I just helping (being a host among 10) for another computer?
The files are ones I have on my computer, so I figured they were mine (or rather ones kindly shared with me by others.)
When I'm playing host, helping 9 others help an upload, is there somewhere to see that?
Or could it be that I'm one of ten others with the exact same file on their systems and we're kicking up bytes here and there or as needed. My denseness knows no bounds.

Also, I cannot for love or money download an "I, Robot" file from anyone anywhere at anytime. I've tried for days and days off and on. Other things download though.

And here's a new glitch in my getalong: I set the speed with which to download items at dsl/cable or higher. And it worked like a champ for quite some time. Now the only speed displayed for downloads is T3 or Higher. Either everyone's gotten a lot richer than me and left dsl way behind or my LW is not showing me all the files I want to see or chose from.
I have tried to trick the system; set it to modem and back, change other preferences and change them back. No go.
I want my full choices back. Sigh.

That's enough for now. I've got other questions, probably just as unanswerable as these. Only maybe someone out there has had this issue and solved it.

Here's hoping. Oh, and hi Grandpa, UKBob and Sgt. Hope all is well in your parts of the world. :-)

More Questions

Okay,

One last question: Why am I now unable to download anything in videos (haven't tried music) though several people are uploading from me? It says I'm turbo-charged. Is it just the hour and day, like too busy? I'm getting really frustrated and ready to go elsewhere, though I have no idea if it's better anywhere else.

Hi Grandma

Welcome. The forum has been a bit inconsistent lately, but I'm surprised one of the Windows experts hasn't responded already.

Your searches tell me you have hit a RAZA source for your files. RAZA (Shareaza) can have long queues that don't work very well as you noted. I rarely get a successful download from RAZA, so usually end up killing that attempt.

The monitor tab shows what files (or parts of the file) are leaving your machine, as you correctly figured out. You can tell if you participated in a swarm if your monitor shows the file as "complete," but less than 100%.

Don't worry about the speed settings: they are mostly informative, and people's speeds vary depending on how busy they are.

If you are looking for the best times to download (usually evenings and weekends in North America), see the two charts at http://www.limewire.com/english/content/netsize.shtml As many as 1/2 a million people jump on and off the network over a few hours, so you can see why results vary :)

By the way, some people avoid T3's, since those seem to be the source of so many scam files. You can use the File menu's Disconnect/Connect commands to connect to a different set of hosts and maybe get better results.

Cheers--hope that starts to answer some of your questions

Thank you!

Thanks so much. The T3 or higher offerings aren't much and don't download anyway, so I will try the disconnect/reconnect. At last sometime to actively try. Much appreciated. Have a great day!
