Help with Java

First of all: do i need JSE Java runtime environment 5.0 or can i have a earlier version? Second of all: if i don't can i bypass the installing java part of intallation? My internet is to slow to download a 131 MB:eek: file for java (Only 56kbs dial-up:mad: ). Please Help!
