Can't Start Up Limewire - Need Help Okay, so until just recently I was using Limewire 4.11. I've been an avid LW user since 4.8 (I think...) and everything's just gone fine and dandy. However, one day, my Limewire browser wouldn't load. The window would come up, but nothing else would. That's it. Just the frame. So, I popped onto the internet and whaddya know! An update! So, I go ahead and download the update. Install it. Everything's going okay. Then, when I try and open Limewire it opens up a window named 'Limewire Setup Dialogue'. No data. Just the window. It does this every time I try loading up Limewire. So, now I've tryed reinstalling. Restarting the computer. I've deleted the preferences .limewire file. I've simply left it alone to load (left it for over 4 hours and still no change). I've tried the offline installation. I've redownloaded my Java Browser. I've tried looking for suggestions in the Technical Difficulties forum and even following solutions that don't even necessarily pertain to this same problem. And yet, there has not yet been a single change. Quite honestly, I am very frustrated and seem to be running out of options. I even tried using Ares, of course, I quickly found that I'd rather not have any P2P sharing device than use that messed up system. Can anyone out there please help me? I'd be very grateful. |
Can you give us a total description of your set up: 1. OS version? (eg: Windows 98) 2. What firewalls you have? 3. How much ram? 4. Hard Disk space available? 5. Connection type? (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.) 6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers? 7. Where are you trying to connect from (home, school, work, etc.)? 8. What version of Limewire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help>About LW...) Will show both LW & Java version. 9. What graphic card do you use? ;) |
1. Windows XP 2. Normal Firewall (LW is excepted) 3. 1.00 GB RAM 4. 6.37 GB Free Hard Drive Space 5. Wireless Connection 6. Router: LinkSys (Model G) 7. Home (downstairs) 8. I have updated versions of both LW (4.12) and Java. 9. NVIDIA graphics card Thanks for the assist. :) |
Normal Firewall i presume is XP firewall. If any other, then enable one & disable the other. Try step 5 in the tips here Fixes for Limewire ie: change LW's compatibility to either windows 2000 or NT. "Sometimes" that makes a difference. ;) |
Tried, but to no effect, sadly. |
I have searched a bit and found this (might be interesting for you to try): http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...+graphics+card http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=51678 ;) |
Thank you very much. I must admit, I am not the most computer savvy, so I am hesitant to try the suggestions offered in the first link. I am sure it's not nearly complicated as it sounds to be. However, I will set to work on trying out the second link's suggestion. You guys really have been trying to help me out and I want to thank you for it. Now, my turn to inform you on my updated situation with LW. A few hours ago, I did get the window to show data. I did the setup and got LW working fine. Even started some downloads. Left my computer alone for a little while and, while I was gone, my roomate walked in, saw the computer was on and unnattended, and felt the liberty to turn it off. Fair enough. When I returned, I turned back on my computer and reopened LW....only to be faced with the same problem: open window, no data. However, after a bit of fooling around, I came to discover that if I have the window open, I can make data come up....if I have the little LW icon in my taskbar right clicked, if that makes any sense. However, if I click anywhere INSIDE the LW window, the whole program freezes up...until I right click the little icon again in the bottom right taskbar. I don't know what this all means or if you even understand what I'm trying to say...hell, even I'm not sure. In any case, thanks again for all the assist. You rock. |
I'm curious, do you have any messenger application running while LW is open?? Maybe MSN messenger with MSN Plus?? ;) |
Sometimes I have MSN Messenger running....but not right now. Hasn't been on all day. |
I just thought of something....LW was working fine, until I installed COD2 (Call of Duty 2) just the other day...at least, I THINK that's when it stopped working. |
Well, then since this can be excluded as cause , it still stays with the possibility that there is a graphic card issue. Unfortunately, I don't have yours on my pc and therefor can't say more than I have already said (and linked to)......:o ;) :o Uninstall COD2 and see whether that will make a difference |
Will do. The time and effort you put into helping me and my system has been invaluable. With any luck, COD's the problem.:o |
You're flattering me.......:o :D :o Keep us updated on how you got on. Your experience might be valuable for other users. ;) |
Very good. Ah! And I just discovered something else! I just went into my Control Panel, fiddeling about, opened up the Java icon and, low and behold, only the window came up. No data. Just like my LW. I just got the latest version of this Java naught but yesterday. Any new ideas? |
After you've tried uninstalling COD2 and re-started your computer, see if LW starts up without any problem. If not, uninstall LW and all JAVA versions on your pc. Re-install Java 1.5.0_07 with the offline installer, restart your pc and then install again LW. ;) |
Sounds like a plan, however, as it is currently 1:34 where I am, I believe that I shall be going to bed before I do any such thing. I'll post either tommorow or the day after to tell you how my results came out. Peace out. |
Well, I have some good news and some bad news. After following all the steps you suggested, LW apparently worked. Then, later on, it stopped. Devolving back to the state it was. Oh well. |
Try deleting your LW Preferences folder whilst LW is closed; instructions here: Point #2 & 3 in Fixes for Limewire (sample image included at bottom of page.) |
