Admin vs Limited account in XP - I can only install LW to an Admin account - Help ?

Hello all, hope this hasn't been posted/answered before...

If am running XP pro with the newest LimeWire (non Beta) and newest Java.

If I sign on with a Administrator account, everything works fine.

If I sign on with a Limited account I get "you need Java 1.5 or better" error.

I have tried uninstalling, reinstalling many times, always to know avail. I have to clean up (uninstall/delete) as much Java as I can, always with the same result. I have given a Limited account admin rights, installed all and everything works fine, then once I switch it back to a Limited account I get the error mentioned above.

I also have problems altering (in any way) the HKEY_LOCAL\Software Javasoft key, so I'm guessing it's a Java corruption issue, but for life of me, I can't figure out what to do.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance

Mike

Hi and welcome !

I made sure to read your post about 10 times...
I do not see any reference to you attempting to install LimeWire into a basic user account with no Admin rights...
(I assume that you have tried that and have simply omitted it from your explanation.)

And, this is not a crazy question... Have you tried installing any other Gnutella clients into a standard user account ? Phex would maybe be the best to test.

Last for now (and I am sure others will be joining in here soon), I assume that you are aware that it is an extremely bad idea to access any of the internet using an Admin rights account.
When you are connected to the internet through an Admin account you are far far more open to "Takeover" ! Your 'security is very much reduced.

Anyway... If the problem is a simple setting in your account(s), no problem...
If it is a Java issue you may be busy for a while.

p.s. When you install Java do you do it 'live' online or do you download the installer and then install from that file ? The latter is always preferable !

Ursula, I have the same problem, but it started after a recent JAVA upgrade. I'm not sure which upgrade, but it was prior to 1.6.0_06.
1) Software cannot be installed under limited accounts.
2) You are totally right about limited accounts and accessing the internet thru them.

What I typically do is install software as an admin, then login as a limited user to access the internet and run applications - much safer. But ever since a recent java update, LIMEWIRE can't access the JRE even though running java -version in a cmd window states the version listed above.
Screwy....

Any help out there?
