Limewire Pro efw won't instal
 

After successfully using the free version, I bought and downloaded the Pro, but the .efw file I downloaded will not open or instal

I have tried reading other threads but can't find the exact answer.

Any help Appreciated

Yes, I do have CA Security suite.

Yes, I got an email after paying for LW Pro, linking me to the download.

I tried to click your EFW link - IE7 blocked it, so I turned off the Pop Up blocker, but it still blocked it.

You could try using another browser to look at the link.

Anyway, here's what it says:

File Type Renamed Zip or Executable File Category Compressed Files Common? No File Description Compressed .ZIP or executable .EXE file renamed by CA Security Centre to have a ".efw" extension; typically applies to e-mail attachments scanned by Computer Associates (CA) antivirus software.

EFW zipped files may be opened by changing the file extension to ".zip" and opening the file with a decompression utility, such as WinZip or Stuffit Expander; executable files may be run directly by changing the file extension to ".exe" and opening the file.

NOTE: Do not open unknown e-mail attachments from non-trusted sources, as they may contain viruses or other malicious programs.

You can prevent EFW files from being created by temporarily disabling your antivirus software when downloading legitimate zipped or executable files. So just try renaming the file to .exe & see whether it installs after that.

If you want to record your location so that it shows, go to User CP (top left next to FAQ). Once you're in the user cp, you can add your location by clicking on Edit Profile on the left of the page:)

I tried renaming to .exe but it still didn't open ...

so I bought and downloaded the Smith Micro Stuffit - and, would you believe, it arrived as an .efw, so I can't open that either!

I have a request in to Smith Micro support ...

Have you tried temporarily disabling CA security, then downloading the LW installer?

I'm with Birdy here, only a little more Ambitious. Get RID of CA Security Completely.
If your using it for Home use, Try something else.
There are some Very Good Free Security Programs out there that will do just fine without all of the Grief.

That was so simple Birdy - I turned the Firewall off, and redownloaded, and I'm in business. Didn't need Stuffit, though I expect it'll come in handy ...

I would be reluctant to remove any protection software - since joining Limewire I have been a little concerned at unwanted windows opening - or is this more with the free version, and not LWPro? (I'm not talking about LimeWire's own popups)

Remoc's trying to save you some pain, by suggesting you get of CA;) He's not suggesting that you run with no protection... just that maybe there are better programs out there & that some of those could be freeware.

It's up to you whether you use it or not, but there are suggestions that it's not that good... check out the links below for some examples.

Are you making sure to scan all files that you download with your AV, before opening them? There are heaps of infected files being shared & you do have to be really careful. It's so easy to download a nasty.

If you're seeing popups (apart from Pro nags etc) then it might be wise to scan for spyware/adware.

It shouldn't matter whether you're using LW basic or Pro... both connect to the same network & neither have security features.

I appreciate being saved from pain, but I don't yet know the name of anything anything more efficient than CA.

Thanks for the tip about scanning downloaded files before opening - I've done this, admittedly using CA Virus Scan, and nothing detected.

However - I have downloaded some so called mp3s which appear ok, but when I click to open, they open Media Player with a message about extension does not match file format, then when I click the play button, it opens up two IE7 windows - a ****** [ < edit - these asterisks appeared where I typed the word C-A-S-I-N-O] .... and a Dating site - pretty dodgy - so if you know how to avoid that stuff, I'd be grateful.
What do you use to scan safely?
