Better search control

Let's say I do a search of "elvis costello". I get about 5000 elvis presley results and almost none for the person I actually want. Happens all the time and with all my searches. It'd be really nice if you could add in an exclude command for search results. So we could search on, "name -unwantedname1 -unwantedname2" or something similar. That'd be really, really helpful. Right now, the more specific I try to be the worse results I get.

That would be great. I have to go through tons of unwanted crap to find music or other files I want. If there was a way to have to specify the serch to find what you do want without what you don't, that would be excellent. When I try to find a song or an artist it serches using on word not an exact match to the neame that I am looking for. I wish it would.

From what I can tell, most Gnutella servants seem to match results that match any keyword. However this could be worked around by having Xolox filter the incoming serach results again to have only results matching all keywords come through. Personally i would like to be able to search fo exact phrases too.

Try putting your search with " " for more accurate results.

I agree and this has been one of the most requested features for a long time.... more specific searches. The best way and the idea is a user controlled filter. Hopefully this can be in the next major version.

I have used quotes and it has never changed the results at all. Not in 1.21 not in any earlier version either.

I also tried using quotes, and they had no noticable effect on my search results.

*shrug* ... it does help a bit.

Anyway... I agree with you all XoloX needs more advanced searching and something I've pushed for since the beginning. Almost every obvious thing people say... has been said by others :P.
This is what this part of the forum is for.. to push the things we all want and feel XoloX *needs*.

Let's seriously push for it. It is definently need in the next version. Maybe it will help cut down on the porn bombs too.

from what i can tell, all of gnutella needs better searching. Having mp3s display their ID3v1 tags so you can search for them would be a good idea

Inproved searching would really improve Xolox

Hello!

I am totally against filtering of search results.I like to get more search results for files that I did not originally request. The reason is because if we would start to filter out results then we will be missing out alot and only the mainstream artists would be found and detected.Gnutella offers more unknown artists the potentional to get listened to more and get a bigger audience then they would have been able to in the old days before Gnutella and the any word approach in the Query Hits is the method that makes this possible.

Also I know that many heavy users of Gnutella like myself usually during the waiting for a file to complete its download(that I originally was looking for) starts to browse the search result list just to see if there is anything interessting there that you might want to check out.I have personally found lots of great stuff this way that I never would have detected if the Query Hits would have been filtered.

So I think it should remain the way it is if it is changed then we will be missing out on alot of great stuff that we would have never searched for in the first place. It is good for us and it is good for all the unknown artists out there.

Filtering the search results would be a feature that should be set by the user. I do the same thing with my search results; however, sometimes I get a lot of junk in my results and I would like to have a way to filter out files. Later on I may change the filter I am using so I get a different set of files without searching again. Nothing to worry about. If the filters were not controlled by the user than it could get annoying.
