Hi MrVV,

Just wanted to give you a bit more information about the dangerous file check and how it works.

People have been trying to spread malware through Gnutella by embedding popups in Windows Media files. The popup says you need to download an additional codec to view the file, but the program it downloads is actually malware. Virus checkers won't detect the Windows Media file as being infected, because it's the program downloaded by the popup that's actually infected. That's the reason LimeWire hides search results for .asf, .asx, .wm, .wma and .wmv files by default.

The people spreading malware tried to get around LimeWire's protection by renaming their files with "safe" extensions like .mp3 and .mov. They realised that when Windows Media Player opens a file that's really a Windows Media file, even if it has a different extension, it will treat it like a normal Windows Media file - including opening any popups embedded in the file. So once again the popup downloads malware and infects your computer.

To protect people from Windows Media files with fake extensions, LimeWire now performs the same check as Windows Media Player, and if the file is really a Windows Media file, but the extension claims otherwise, LimeWire cancels the download.

Hope this helps to explain what happened to your download - and why it's not necessarily a bad thing. ;-)

Cheers,
Michael
