These volunteers keep the board organized and moving. Moderators are authorized to: (in order of increasing severity) Move posts to the correct forums. Many times, members post in the wrong forum. These off-topic posts may impede the normal operation of the forum. Edit posts. Moderators will edit posts that are offensive or break any of the House Rules. Delete posts. Posts that cannot be edited to comply with the House Rules will be deleted. Restrict members. This is one of the last punishments before a member is banned. Restrictions may include placing all new posts in a moderation queue or temporarily banning the offender. Ban members. The most severe punishment. Three or more moderators or administrators must agree to the ban for this action to occur. Banning is reserved for very severe offenses and members who, after many warnings, fail to comply with the House Rules. Banning is permanent. Bans cannot be removed by the moderators and probably won't be removed by the administration. The Rules 1. Warez, copyright violation, or any other illegal activity may NOT be linked or expressed in any form. Topics discussing techniques for violating these laws and messages containing locations of web sites or other servers hosting illegal content will be silently removed. Multiple offenses will result in consequences. 2. Spamming and excessive advertising will not be tolerated. 3. There will be no excessive use of profanity in any forum. 4. There will be no racial, ethnic, or gender based insults, or any other personal attacks. 5. Pictures may be attached to posts and signatures if they are not sexually explicit or offensive. 6. Remember to post in the correct forum. Take your time to look at other threads and see where your post will go. If your post is placed in the wrong forum it will be moved by a moderator. 7. If you see a post in the wrong forum or in violation of the House Rules, please contact a moderator via Private Message or the "Report this post to a moderator" link at the bottom of every post. Please do not respond directly to the member - a moderator will do what is required. 8. Any impersonation of a forum member in any mode of communication is strictly prohibited and will result in banning. 9. Multiple copies of the same post will not be tolerated. Post your question, comment, or complaint only once. There is no need to express yourself more than once. Duplicate posts will be deleted with little or no warning. 10. Posts should have descriptive subjects. Vague titles such as "Help!", "Why?", and the like may not get enough attention to the contents. 11. Do not divulge anyone's personal information in the forum, not even your own. This includes e-mail addresses, IP addresses, age, house address, and any other distinguishing information. Don´t use eMail addresses in your nick. 12. Signatures may be used as long as they are not offensive or sexually explicit. 13. Failure to show that you have read the forum rules may result in forum rules breach infraction points or warnings awarded against you which may later total up to an automatic temporary or permanent ban. Supplying system details is a prerequisite in most cases, particularly with connection or installation issues. Violation of any of these rules will bring consequences, determined on a case-by-case basis. Thank You! Thanks for taking the time to read these forum guidelines. We hope your visit is helpful and mutually beneficial to the entire community. |

| A 56 kbps modem is the equivalent of 8KB/s however there will be some loss due to overhead. So at very best you'd get a total of 7 KB/s but on average about 5 KB/s. That is the total upload & downld combined (unlike cable/broadband, etc. that have separate upld & downld speeds.) So that means you need to balance your upld & downld bandwidth. eg: say 3-3.5 down & 1.75-2 up. Unfortunately on dial up it's not possible to get better than that. I used LW on dial up for over 3 years (until 6 months ago.) We dial up users often have the hardest (rare ones) to get files ... I mean that in more ways than one lol. For fastest downlds try not to downld too many at once. Keep it to one or 2 or perhaps 3 max. But at 3 you might be testing others patience. lol Make sure you have your firewalls set up correctly for LW to pass thru both ways. See: http://www.limewire.com/english/content/firewalls.shtml After LW's been on for at least 30 mins or much longer, Do this test: Bug Report instructions & sample image If it's True then that's good & healthy. If it's False then you have a firewall that's not properly configured for others to upld from you. Quote:

| wal, dear Lord...... i did the tweaking and the saving on the DL and the UL. did the 1.75 and the 3. ya gotta know though.... that's being optimistic. rechecked the firewall: all is well. someone has actually uploaded a file from me! whoop whoop! was begining to feel a mite parasitic thar....fer jes a lil bit though. ahhh.... the 26.4k seemed so alien as to be surreal, eh? that's right up there with my initial reaction to this provider. *wipes tears* 'tis true. it is half of the 56k. and tests (those good ol test thingies from MSN) timed it at a 18.?k. my foray into rural ND has caused me to do some heavier drugs. doc's a city slicker, so he's clueless, but he upped the dose on the niacin. keeps the b/p down, ya know. thank you for your speedy response and carin to help. you younguns are mity polite.

| When I first started reading this thread.. I though. OMG the nerve of that person telling someone their too stupid! (now you can say it return.. The nerve of soem people to critique others..) I am putting part of it down to the flu though. I have to say that this has been the most helpful unhelpful one yet. I have folloed the instructions (for once in simple enough terms even I couldn't miss it..) and while I am not getting any better results, I am to the point I am thinking it might be comcast not me.. Either way you have been incrediably patient in answering the same sort of question differently yet the same each time. I would almost swear you'd been a Teacher once, except I haven't had that many with that much patience.. |

| Just a suggestion....www.pcpitstop.com which is a site I LOVE...will test your pc and tell you what your actual band/up and band/down is, plus a bunch of other info....I've used this site for a couple of years now. Alana Quote:

| Hey im not sure what i should set my upload bandwith or my maximum downloads to. What do you think they should be set around considering whats below. AMD Athalon XP 2600+ ~2.2 512DDR Nvidia Geforce4 Fx 128DDR 120GB HD Cox 5.0MBPS |

| I am on comcast, they said 3mb download, I did the download test on pc pitstop it says 1917kbs Ok. I tried to figure out what you were calculating (and failed miserably) can you be so kind as to tell me what this greek means? They also claim they don't filter P2P so why are my downloads still slow or am I just percieving them to be? what do you want me to share at this point to know what my best settings should be? I am a wireless notebook on xp with very little clue about what I am doing or should be obv. as I feel like I might have screwed up something vice fix it.. I have windows firewall up, but I believe I have the port opened and set up like suggested.. I am sure I will get a "your stupi" but am I missing something or just not seeing the forest for the trees.. |

The speed tests must be done numerous times and at different times of the day in order to get a more accurate estimation of what your download and upload bandwidth are, so go there again and do it all over. As I say in the initial post, the upload speed is important too so find that out too from the tests. Also, I'm greek so the way I understand: "can you be so kind as to tell me what this greek means?" is : "can you be so kind as to tell me what this incredibly obvious and easy to understand thing means?"

| I still haven't got a reply, I opened my ports so I am cruising at 50-70-100 but I still have those occasional 10KB/s. I'm hoping I can rise all of my speeds up to 100. What should I do to get my speeds up? I have a McAfee firewall. AMD Athalon XP 2600+ ~2.2 512DDR Nvidia Geforce4 Fx 128DDR 120GB HD Cox 5.0MBPS |

| I notice you use Cox. They are known to filter p2p for 'selected' users. Probably those that share or downld a lot. See: ISP's known to BLOCK or Filter p2p or specifically Limewire BUT this might not affect you. It only seems to affect some people. It's been documented at several p2p forums ... not only affects LW & not everybody. Thus your slow speeds might be due to filtering. |
