Blocking the port in this way usually stops the software which is using it.
Way doesnt it stop LW than?

It depends on the particular router device. Some will totally block the incoming & outgoing from certain ports whereas some will only close off incoming. I'm not sure about netgear. There may be other ways you can set it up. I've sent a pm to another member for their thoughts.

i have a linksys router, but you might also have the ability to do the same in the netgear router with a slight modification to the steps. but in my advanced setup, it has a filters tab, i click that and i have full control over which computers can access outside of my network, along with which computers can access which ports, and network wide port filtering.

if your users are dumb enough, they would never no how to change limewire to use another port if you block it. you may want to disable upnp also. but like as i was saying, if they happen to find out how to change the port number, then that block wont work. but you can always figure out what port they set it to via the routers DHCP clients table (if your network is using dhcp) along side using the router log to verify which computer is accessing which ports. (atleast on my router it has this)...

if you want to goto the extreme, (on my router) you can block mac addresses (nic hardware addresses) (or IP addresses if mac blocking is too difficult) from using a certain protocol on a range of ports. however, gnutella is not on the list (since its not a standard network protocol)... BUT if you block the UDP protocol on all ports (1 to 65535), then LimeWire wont be able to do any FW2FW transfers at all. (this means no uploads or downloads.) and remember to disable the upnp service on the router so their machines cant open ports because this will circumvent the whole process.

but it still will beable to connect to the network using tcp (which is RECOMMENED THAT YOU SHOULD NOT BLOCK TCP since that is the basic communication protocol of the internet, and you would block your users from accessing even webpages).

What you need to do is to limit the dl/up speed of LWs on each machine so they don't slow down the network [total bandwidth (up then down) available minus 25% / number of people using LW]. Go in Options -> downloads to limit dl speed, go in Options -> transfers -> basic to limit upload speed.

There is no way you'll be able to block totally LW from your netgear without serioulsy impairing basic internet traffic on your network. You would need a software solution acting as a router/gateway ie a linux/openbsd box.

First of all I'd like to say "Hi" , as I've just regisitered.

I was wondering if anyone can help me. I've just installed the new version,have done everything that was mentioned to set up the firewall and still I can't connect. I know the port isn't blocked.

My Older version 4.8.1 stopped working sometime in late May for some strange reason. I cleared out everything to do with the older version and installed the new version.

Sob and still I can't connect.

My ISP is Plus.net does anyone know whether they have started to block Limewire as there is nothing on their website about it.

HELLLLLLLLLLLP!! I know how to port-forward, I do it all the time. So I set the port # to forward in Limewire and on my DSL router. But it still claims I'm behind a firewall! Grrrr! I do NOT have a firewall - what else would the problem be? BTW - I clicked on the test page you had in another post for testing if I can get to port 6346 - and it fails every time.

PS. I even set my router to open ALL PORTS and it still failed to connect and failed to let me to the 6346 test page.

LW & Java version (help > about LW & you'll see)
Firewall you're using
Modem/router brand & model
ISP
Connection type (DSL etc)
Where you connect from (home, school etc)
Are you sharing a connection with other computers
Is this your first try with LW

Have you made sure to configure your software firewall (if you use one) to allow LW access? A lot of connection issues are discussed here
Connection problems? Check here first!

Have you used p2p before? Something is blocking the default port... maybe your ISP?

Ok here's the details.
- I use Windows 2000 pro
- LW version 4.12.3 - the Basic, not Pro
- I used to use Limewire last year and it worked fine for me
- I do NOT have a firewall - I'm positive
- My DSL modem is a Zyxel 645 and I know how to do port forwarding
- I connect from home - no router or anything. Just my 1 pc.

Have you tried using any other p2p apps & if so, do they give you the same problem?

Who is your ISP?

You could try changing to a higher port (eg something in the range 49152-65535). A higher port may not be blocked but LW is probably still going to pick up the NAT firewall within your modem. Does the modem support UPnP? If so, have you tried enabling UPnP & choosing that option within LW's options > advanced > firewall config?

Sorry, I can't help much more here. Someone else might have a better idea?

I called my ISP and they block gnutella packets because it was slowing down their DSL servers!! GRRRRRRRRRR At least I know what the problem is now.

Pardon? What ISP? And how will I fix it?

Who is your isp? If LW suddenly stopped working 2 weeks ago & Bearshare also refuses to connect, it sounds suspiciously like your ISP is at fault. Options: change isp or try using a proxy. A Fix for those whose ISP's block Limewire pages 1 - 3 which have links to alternative instructions. eg: Tor
You could also try connecting thru a higher port such as between 49152 - 65535. ie: go to LW's menu bar, Tools>Options>Advanced>Firewalls & change ports there.
