When I go to install, I get an error message saying 'Error. Can't initialize plugins directory.'

What's wrong? Am I missing the plugin and if so which one? and if I have it why won't it initialize?

Do you have Java installed on your computer? You should have the latest version which is available from the link in this thread, also check the instructions about downloading the installer. Java must be installed before you try to install Limewire.

Also it will be worth using the alternate windows installer, also this must be downloaded

yes i do have the latest java.

my computer runs windows xp, 1.70 ghz, 256 ram, and defintely not loaded. the trouble is that i had limewire loaded for a year, then my hard drive crashed and so i had a friend put in a new drive and reload everything. no limewire and i can't load it. he swears he loaded everything.

i'm stumped.

You could also try reinstalling Java...
