GSpot normally determines which codecs you need for a particular video. However, perhaps your codecs are out of date or just don't have the correct ones. See CODECs list and alternate players for Movies
Also, I would highly recommend getting a backup player with in-built codecs such as VLC (See link above for links you need.)
