You'll just have to keep trying with the search to see what work best for you. To my knowledge there are no real tricks to it. If you have any suggestions, you can post them in the
New Feature Requests section of the forums.
When your logged into the forums and you want to see if anyone has replied to any of your subscribed threads. Click on the "User CP" link. It's always in the upper left of any forum page. It will show a list of any new replies since your last visit.

For the other icons, just put your mouse on them and it'll show what they mean. Also you might want to have a look through the forum
