Question up- and download conns direct?

I'm wondering if the up- and download connections have anything to do with the gnutella network itself. I mean, if I'm downloading from someone, do the packets go through the gnutella net (and might have to pass a slow modem) or are these connections "direct" like if I'm having an ftp connect to some server? To ask it in another way: the gnutella-net itself is only there to search for hosts, search for the files these hosts provide and nothing else? Downloads are not routed through gnutella hosts only but routed like any other internet connect? Am I right with this?
