Default Domain Names

Some of us use services like dns2go.com and no-ip.com to give our computers a domain name (most of these are free).

If we could report a domain name instead of just an IP address we could relieve a number of issues.

When someone wanted to reconnect to us to resume a download they could resolve the domain name to retrieve our current IP address. As things currently stand there is no easy way to find a host who's IP address has expired.

All host caches could record domain names to help someone reconnect to the network after restarting. Again, dynamically assigned IP addresses become less of an issue.

Many servents will let you report a specific IP address for incoming connections. This lets those of us behind routers report the router's WAN address to be used in conjunction with port forwarding to give us a direct connection with the network (no need for someone to request a push from us for uploads). Being able to report a domain name will keep us from needing to update the forced IP with every expiration.

When you shut down your file sharing program you can shut down the client side service of dns2go (or whatever) to keep the gnutella traffic from being sent to you (if the traffic is using your domain name first for routing). This will keep the gnutella traffic away from your network when you don't want it there, reducing traffic waste.
