I suspect the ActionTec 1701-wg UPnP doesn't work efficiently on them. Port forwarding would have thus been the way to go ... listed under actiontec PortForward.com - Free Help Setting up Your Router or Firewall. But then you didn't say whether UPnP was enabled on it or not. If not, that's a simple answer, whilst still giving you protection as does port forwarding.
