DVDs are pretty fussy about formats. Well, most ordinary DVD players are. I got one that plays
DivX files (which are .avi) so it's pretty easy for me because all I have to do is dump all my
downloads to a DVD in ordinary computer data format and it still works. Next time you buy a
DVD player look for the DivX logo because that format can pack 5 or 6 movies on the same size
disk and you don't need to be a video engineer to do it.

Anyway, for regular DVD players you have to go through a few steps to convert a typical
download into a DVD-compatible format. I usually advise people to go to VideoHelp.com
for all the step-by-step info they need for that.
