Default LimeWire with Java2 1.4.0 in Win98 fixed!

Oh no! You just installed Java2 1.4.0 and now the LimeWire Installer says your Java version isn't up to date! Oh dear, what to do? Read on, my friend....

To install LimeWire 2.2.4 under Java2 1.4.0, follow these simple steps:
Copy the following text into NotePad and save it as "LWJava.reg". Once saved, simply execute and merge into your registry.

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\JavaSoft\Java Runtime Environment\1.3.1]
"JavaHome"="C:\\Program Files\\Java\\j2re1.4.0"
"MicroVersion"="0"
"RuntimeLib"="C:\\Program Files\\Java\\j2re1.4.0\\bin\\client\\jvm.dll"

***IMPORTANT NOTE!***
This has ben tested only in Windows 98 Second Edition. Using this registry patch in any other Windows-based OS is done solely AT YOUR OWN RISK! This "hack/patch" is also not officially endorsed by LimeWire LLC, period. Again, USE ONLY AT YOUR OWN RISK!

Okay, now that that's out of the way, let me explain what this handy-dandy patch does. Under the "Java Runtime Environment" key, there is a key for each version of Java you have installed. When Java2 1.3.1 is installed, the LimeWire Installer sees the "HKLM\Software\JavaSoft\Java Runtime Environment\1.3.1" key and assumes Java2 is installed. When you install Java2 1.4.0, however, LimeWire isn't smart enough to detect future versions of Java. This nifty patch just makes a copy of the 1.4.0 key and renames it to 1.3.1, therby allowing LimeWire to install.

Please make sure the paths in the registry file are correct for your system. If not, then everything may be boinked and you might have to reinstall Java. These paths are correct for the default install of Java2 1.4.0 ONLY.

Enjoy the Good that is LimeWire!
