Then try VLC .. if it cannot play the file then it is probably bogus: VLC - (click on link) _ (choose nearest mirror site). VLC player has codecs built-in.

The files in question if mpeg might be some variation of MPeg 4. Though normally mpeg 4 uses mp4 extension, it may also show as mpg or mpeg.
