LW's media player is not super reliable unfortunately. Especially if LW is busy, the media player gets low priority with the cpu. If they play fine in wmp, then you can be confident the files are ok then. You can disable LW's media player so when you launch a song, WMP opens up instead. Option is under Tools -> Options -> Player.
