and of course do not do a real update....i.e. reformat and do a clean install...you can buy an update version of the OS (hmmmm....maybe not, because as far as I know you can only acquire OEM versions of XP at this time, and those are the last) but you need not do an 'update'...by that I mean you can reformat the HDD, then put the OS install disc into your drive and it will prompt you to prove you have a previous version of windows by putting that install disc in the drive...then you will reinstall the XP disc into your drive and off you go to do a clean install...
as noted, you probably don't even have this option with XP because I don't think any upgrade discs are around for purchase at this time...
