Which version of LW 5 are you using, which version of Java & which OS?

Have you tried reverting to an earlier Java version to see whether that helps?

You can find a list of earlier Java versions here: Archive: Java[tm] Technology Products Download

See whether going back an update or two has any effect. Choose an older update from the JRE 6 list.
In the past, some people have have had issues with the current version of Java, whereas an older version works just fine
