I don't use Windows Defender or AVG. Looks like you can set Defender to real time protection:
Windows Defender: Support
AVG's paid version seems to have real time protection. But I don't think the free one does. That's something you should check out.
But it's quick & easy to scan manually anyway... just get into the habit of scanning a file as soon as it's downloaded

Tell me what happened & then we'll both know. We think it was some weird bug. Everybody was banned. Admins were banned. It was a PITA for everyone.
