Default Itunes Program Question: old to new

I have been using an older Itunes program to run my ipods with. Recently a friend gave me a nice larger memory ipod I would like to use. Unfortunately It has a newer operating program in it and will not work with the older program I use to load my ipods with on my computer.

The new ipod I was given can not be changed to the older program. From what I've researched you can only load newer programs to it. SO, first of all is that correct? And then secondly, If I download a newer program of Itunes on to my computer will I risk losing all the music I have downloaded through the years? Remember the warnings it gives you, things like "you are removing all your content and replacing it with version such and such."

It seems like a big risk.
