The first thing I'd try is to open the files with FileBuddy, which is worth it's weight in gold.

The file type should show as .mp3, and set the file creator to 'hook'. Once you've done this, it will be added to FileBuddys pop-up choices.

If the file then plays via iTunes, then something is probably trying to automatically open the mp3's on download, and converting the creator to something iTunes does not recognize. For example, it won't reconize Media Player file as far as I know.

If they open ok after re-setting, try setting the iTunes prefs to 'play internet tunes' and 'play automatically' (or something like that).
