NO SOFTWARE should arbitrarily pop up and ask for a user name and password. It is a classic way of grabbing private information on all the online services. To randomly pop up dialog boxes asking for this kind of information and providing no other information or documentation is absolutely idiocy and should be taken care of immediately.
