You need to be using AOL 6.0 or above for LimeWire to be able to connect. Also, keep in mind that LimeWire will take anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes to obtain a good connection to the network.
If you still not able to connect, you may need to download and install an alternative version of LW.
To download it, go here:

Get more info on this version here:

To open your LimeWire downloads, you can go to the Library tab and browse all the files in your shared directory. Selecting (highlighting) a file and clicking launch will open the song in the default player. If Winamp is your default, then Winamp will launch and play your song.
If Winamp is not your default mp3 player and you want to listen to the song in Winamp, browse your hard drive (with windows exporer or the "My computer" shell). Find your shared folder. If you didn't change it manually, it will be located here:
C:\Program Files\LimeWire\Shared
or a varient thereof.
From here, you can hold down the shift key, right-click the file, and click on the "Open With" option. You will be given a list of programs you can use to open the file with.
You can even reassociate files with Winamp (i.e. as opposed to Real Player) so that Winamp will open all your mp3s by default. Click Start > Settings > Folder Options. Click on the file types tab. Here you can modify the way windows open files of any type.
Hope I didn't give you information overload. Post again if you need some more help! :-)
