how do i delete a file

I downloaded something and its not what i wanted..so i deleted it but its still in my files...how do i permanently delete it?

Try shutting the program down first, then try deleting it. If it still won't delete, reboot your computer and try again. If that fails reboot into safe mode and delete it.
