See View->Connections to watch how LW is connecting. Sounds like you are getting kicked/not being accepted by stable Ultrapeers, or your connections are dropping for some other reason.

What do you use to connect to the internet?

Yes, it is frustrating when LW can't find Ultrapeers to accept your connection, and worse figuring out why they won't (I know--I spent six months before discovering my ISP had been using equipment and software to control filesharing. All is good now thanks to the help I got here.)

Anyway, once you get the green light, you can type in searches, hit the search button, which will send requests to the connected Ultapeers and passed on from there. If your Connections Pane just endlessly shows attempts to connect to a list of IP numbers and little else, then your connection attempts are being blocked somehow. Might be your setup, or a block futher upstream. Post your details and someone might have a similar setup and know an easy fix.

If the IP's connect and start displaying info, but don't last long, yor connection attempts are going through, but not being accepted. The easiest way to hope for better connections is to share about 100 or more popular files.

Sorry if that sound wishy-wash. Specifics always help get more specific answers.

Default arrgghhh...

ok, well I deleted it and downloaded again, and the little green light will just not go on. I dont know what to check and what to tell you about my system that could help. brand new imac and i cant get a single song...when it was up and running the first time, I would get lots of finds from a search.. but every single one I tried to download ultimately said that I needed more sources. back in the day when I used to have an old limewire, I would get that message occasionally, but not every time. If I had an alternative to limewire, I would be on it right now... this program is driving me crazy. any suggestions would be great..thanks.

There are a number of ways you can get your specifics. The easiest is to go to the Apple menu and choose "About This Mac"
That will give you the type of Mac, the memory installed, and the version of the system software. There is also an option to gather much more detail--like the kind you need to see what kind of CD burner you have.

If you have a new Mac, spend some time looking at the System Preferences, especially the Software Update (run the update) and Sharing items (find the firewall tab, click on the New button, and look through the list to find the item that says "Gnutella/Limewire (6346)).

Basic troubleshooting is as simple as running a "Safe Boot" and "Reparing Permissions" (see http://www.macattorney.com/tutorial.html ).

For more details about LimeWire, look at the Prefereces and find the item that says "Bug Reports." Click on the button for "Sample Bug Reports", select all the info and copy, or just scroll to see what kind of information the developers use to track down problems--most of it won't make much sense to average users like us.

There are other filesharing tools for OSX users, but LW is the best I've tried. Filesharing is very complex and still developing quickly. As you saw the first time you tried it, it can work right out of the box, but I suspect other hosts either "evaluate" new members, or just happen to have open slots when you tried to connect. Take a look at http://www.limewire.com/english/content/netsize.shtml to see the best times to connect.

Hope that helps you get going on figuring out how to connect. Do remember to post back and help others too.
