Limewire won't connect

I can't get limewire to connect. It's been doing this since last week.

Unregistered July 13th, 2001 07:01 AM

Me too

Limewire sometimes connects, sometimes not. (More often NOT) Why?

Unregistered July 14th, 2001 01:42 PM

I've installed Limewire 1.6 on a Mac running OS 8.6. No problem with download or installation. Application opens, but won't connect, despite active internet connection. Any thoughts?

gbildson July 14th, 2001 02:08 PM

Try to manually connect to connect.gnutellanet.com
or (connect1 (2,3,4)).

-greg

leosab July 15th, 2001 09:53 AM

I'm having the same problem. But I also have this problem of not being able to connect with BearShare which leads me to believe it may be some kind of Gnutella network problem. My cable modem connection to the internet is otherwise fine. Any ideas? Please help!

gbildson July 15th, 2001 10:43 AM

Try all the available pong caches. If those do not work, try router.limewire.com:6349.

Next week, the LimeWire clients should connect better with the addition of some new server hardware/software.

-greg

leosab July 15th, 2001 11:33 AM

thanks greg, but could you please elaborate on how to do those suggestions?

gbildson July 15th, 2001 11:40 AM

On the Connections tab, there are two add buttons and a textfield beside each.

If you just want to manually use connect1.limewire.com this one time to connect, then type it into the upper textfield and hit the add button.

If you always want to use connect1.limewire.com for connecting, type it into the lower textfield, click the add button and then click connect.

Assuming that your connect button is working (you may need to wait a little and try again), that should work.

-greg

leosab July 15th, 2001 12:04 PM

thanks again greg. your reply suggestions sounded so promising, but i guess my connect button isn't working. is that a limewire problem i need to troubleshoot?

gbildson July 15th, 2001 12:09 PM

If you have never connected with BearShare or LimeWire then you are behind some type of firewall or proxy where you can not connect. If only your browser (Netscape or IE) can work in general then you won't be able to connect.

If it is just an issue of the connect button not working, try the community tab to force an attempt. Experiment a little.

-greg

leosab July 15th, 2001 12:28 PM

that's my concern. i've formerly used bearshare without a problem. only now am i having problems with the new bearshare upgrade, and limewire. kinda makes one wish he just left well enough alone!

thanks for your suggestions greg. i'll try fiddling with that community tab to force a connect.

leosab July 15th, 2001 01:48 PM

Greg,

I just checked my cable company's network status and here's what they're presently saying:

"Date Entered: 07/13/2001 03:27:12 PM PDT

There is IP renumbering planned for West. In order to restore your connection after the scheduled service, please do a Release/Renew or reboot your system. The maintenance will begin 07/18/2001 03:00:00 AM PDT."

I wouldn't pay that much attention to the date they say it will begin. They've misrepresented similar events before. Could this "IP renumbering" be what's causing my bearshare/limewire problems? Please keep in mind that I used to use bearshare with no problem, until I recently upgraded my BearShare v2.2.4 to v2.2.6. When that bombed, I switched to LimeWire but that wasn't working either.

gbildson July 15th, 2001 03:49 PM

Not if you rebooted and ensured that your connection was working.

If you have a Wi***/98/ME type computer, you might want to look for the newdotnet.dll problem. See the sticky forum and try to uninstall that.

-greg

leosab July 15th, 2001 07:08 PM

nope. that didn't seem to do it either. i ran ad-aware 5.5 and cleared out all those little ad things, but i'm still facing the same problem: NO CONNECTION!

thanks for your continuing efforts, greg. Please keep helping me try to get back on bearshare or limewire! thanks.

Nerium123 July 16th, 2001 05:34 AM

I had to remove all Bearshare files before LimeWire would connect. Now it works fine (except for the library: shows only 5% of the files I am willing to share).

leosab July 16th, 2001 08:05 PM

I've completely removed BearShare but I still can't get any LimeWire connections! What is this?!?! I don't usually have problems trying to install a new piece of software. Frustrating. Any answers out there that will get my LimeWire up and running, as my old BearShare v2.2.4 used to work? HELP!!!

leosab July 17th, 2001 01:12 PM

where did Greg go? He always seemed to have an answer to these troubleshooting problems. Greg?

Unregistered July 17th, 2001 09:43 PM

I'm having the same problem. After using Limewire for several weeks, I suddenly constantly get "Disconnected / no files available" next to the connect button, even if it shows "Disconnect," which it normally does if I'm connected. I haven't changed any setting, so I can't figure out where this problem is originating. I'm using an iMac with a 56k modem. There's something vewy scwewy going on here...

gbildson July 17th, 2001 09:48 PM

I don't have an answer. If you have tried all the possible connection points (www.gnutellanews.com)
and you were able to connect before then it could be a new problem.

Can you folks run the LimeWire with a console window to get any error messages? Maybe adam knows the trick for that. I'll find out tomorrow. You also may want to try some new betas that we put out.

-greg

Unregistered July 18th, 2001 11:00 AM

I'm beginning to suspect that it might be a problem on my computer's end. Perhaps I inadvertantly deleted a file needed for connection. The reason I suspect such is that I'm also currently not able to get a connection with MSN Explorer, where I used to connect no problem. Maybe if I reinstall MSN Explorer, it will provide the file I deleted. Maybe. I'll let you know if that was it when I get a chance to try.

-Leo

Unregistered July 19th, 2001 09:14 AM

me too

I can't connect too. Also I noticed that sometimes limewire is able to establish a connection to one or two hosts but loses these connections after exchanging two messages.

DonDave

leosab July 19th, 2001 09:48 AM

unfortunately reinstalling msn explorer didn't do the trick. now both limewire and my msn explorer are not working correctly. oh well. at least I still have an internet connection (for now!).

hoping an answer to my gnutella problem comes...

Bagfran July 20th, 2001 04:39 AM

I can't connect either!

I'm having almost exactly the same problem!

I used to have no problems with Limewire - but after not using it for a while, I have updated to v. 1.6 and now, no connection!

Autoconnect doesn't even attempt to work, and my Connect button on the 'Connections' tab is dead. When I try to force a connection through the 'Community' tab, it makes a bit of a feeble effort, but gives up after a few seconds and disconnects again!

Help!

leosab July 20th, 2001 03:47 PM

Greg, might this be the reason?

I got the following off my ISP's web site. Might it be the reason I can't establish a connection with LimeWire, BearShare, or any other similar protocol anymore? Please comment. Thank you!

"Can I Host a Server?

AT&T Broadband does not allow servers to be connected to the cable modem. This means that no computer in a personal network can be used as a server.

Last revised on 2001-06-27 00:00:00.0"

Come to think of it, the stated date of their last revision coincides with about the time I started having these unable to connect problems. Or am I just going crazy?

leosab July 20th, 2001 07:34 PM

ok, i don't think that was it either. i'm fairly sure now that it's a network control panel problem. i'll troubleshoot that these next couple of days and we'll see if that was it. wish me luck. there's a non-copyrighted song i'm interested in downloading...

same problem here

Hi,

i have the same problem here. No connection with 1.6.
It always worked flawless before. I hoped that 1.6b would solve the issue, but no, it does not.
Internet connection is up and running, otherwise I could not write this.
I also installed Bearshare (afterwards) and it connects without problems.

When I start Limewire, it tries connecting to the Autoconnect hosts. After it gives up, the connect button does not make it try again. Also adding hosts in the upper field does not work. Adding autoconnect hosts does work.

I am connected to the net via a local server that uses IP Masquerading.

I hope you can solve this problem because Limewire is a great program and I hope I can use it again soon.

limewire connection problems

I'm a new visitor to this site and perhaps I am missing something, but I haven't seen any mention of what caused the identical problem in my connections to limewire.

Have any of you folks recently installed Audiogalaxy? Audiogalaxy and Bearshare and two KNOWN sites that sneak spyware onto your computer. Audiogalaxy sneaks Webhancer onto your system and Bearshare sneaks new.net onto your system.

We had downloaded Audiogalaxy just before all our problems began. After using Limewire flawlessly for a few months, we suddenly could not connect. We were frustrated for a week. We also were attempting to download WinMX and could not download it.

After being told about the spyware, we went to ad-aware.com and downloaded their program. After checking our system, 52 spyware components were discovered and removed.

After running ad-aware, all connections to limewire were fine once again and we were able to download WinMX with no problem. Has been working great since.

BearShare doesn't sneak spyware onto your computer. It clearly describes what New.net is and gives you the option of not installing it.

I installed LW 1.6b a week ago and immediately got 2800 hosts. Had good luck up till a few days ago, and now I fluctuate between 2 and 15 or so. Very strange. Mac 9.1/RR cable

Unregistered August 7th, 2001 10:53 PM

same here

I can connect fine at qwork using mac OS 9.1 but at home running win 2k it worked until I installed 1.6b. I tried to install i.6d and still doesn't take. Bearshare doesn't work either. I am firewalled with a 192.168.xxx.xxx address, but then I am at work as well. I am the Admin there and it works fine. I have a feeling it has something to do with the latest Java Runtime. Because When I installed 1.6b it never worked though I still had 1.4 on the PC and it worked fine. I uninstalled 1.4 hoping that would solve the issue and still no go. I tried the manual connects and most of the tips on these boards.

leosab August 12th, 2001 03:13 AM

Finally got it!

I finally was able to successfully troubleshoot my LimeWire connection problem. For me, the problem was having had installed the free ZoneLabs firewall. After I uninstalled it due to it slowing my system down too much, my LimeWire troubles, among other software troubles, began to surface. My brother-in-law was able to suggest to me the remedy that ultimately proved effective -- reinstall the ZoneLabs firewall but just keep in running inoperative in the background. Apparantly, if you uninstall ZoneLabs it takes out more than just the ZoneLabs programs. It takes some essential internet stuff as well.

In any event, if you're having almost any problem as we've all discussed here, it might not be a bad idea for you to consider that possible scenario, and try reinstalling any thing you recently removed prior to your software troubles. For me, it was ZoneLabs, but I would imagine that it could be anything. Good luck!

I was using limewire today and my laptop had to restart cuz i inserted my flash drive and it bogged things up. when i opened limewire after restarting it just sat in the little connecting window with the connecting bar at 12% saying 'connecting to html...' but it didnt move past that point. i have waited a few hours and tried several times and thats all limewire does. whats the problem and how can i fix it?

macster72 February 7th, 2008 07:01 AM

helllppp I keep having trouble too I'm running vista on a pc and disabled all firewalls and anti spyware progs and still get "LOADING INTERNATIONALIZATION SUPPORT" at bottom and doesnt seem to stop or progress. I tried your advice downloading and installing Java ver 1.5.0 but your link on your forums took me to 1.5.11 which seems to be the same as 1.6.0

tried and tried

i have tried everything that has been recommended on this topic, but nothing works. My brother has limewire on his laptop as well and neither of our limewire's are running. I have AVG free and that does not have a firewall and the windows firewall was configured to allow limewire, but limewire has refused to work for the last few months. Is it possible that there is a setting on the main computer of the wireless network or is there something else i could try?

Have a look at this link by Lotr (http://www.gnutellaforums.com/connec...-limewire.html) you can always try this fix on this link (http://www.gnutellaforums.com/downlo...k-tiscali.html)

Limewire no connect!!

Greg, you seem to be the brains here, this is my first time here, so I will do my best! For about a month now there has been no problem for limewire to connect, but now all of a sudden it won't!! It's been about an hour now and still no connection! I had checked the F&Q's and they said the longer you stay online with Limewire the quicker the connection will become! Sometimes it connects but most of the time it takes a long time to do so. Today has been the worst though, it just won't connect! VERY FRUSTRATING!!!!! I looked at some of the other threads, but I'm not a brain at a lot of this lingo, I need very specific answers! PLEASE HELP!!!

Hi sabruce01 In Limewire Links (below) click on (If LW will not connect) and go through these fixes -- if still no good try the link (connection problems) let us know how you got on with these fixes.

Mr Anon Eemus July 2nd, 2008 01:27 AM

All I did was go into:
Start/Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services
and in Services I enabled Universal Plug and Play and Wam Bam Kapow.
All the sudden the little green bars started showing up and I was connected.

I hope this helps.
